Civil War Roundtable

August 1, 2015

Welcome back to the Roundtable. Summer is nearly over and we begin our twenty-third year on Monday, August 24, with a presentation by author and historian, Nick K. Adams.

Adams has transcribed 100 letters written by his great-great-grandfather, David Brainard Griffin, from the time he enlisted in the 2nd Minnesota at Fort Snelling in September 1861 until his death two years later at Chickamauga. These letters have been compiled in Adams’ recent book, My Dear Wife and Children: Civil War Letters From A 2nd Minnesota Volunteer. The book provides touching insights into the thoughts, feelings and experiences of the common soldier separated from his wife, children and homestead by the war.

Nick Adams lives in WashingtonState. He is a retired elementary school teacher and is now a popular historical speaker and anenthusiastic Civil War researcher and re-enactor.

The program schedule for our 2015-16 year accompanies this letter (as an attachment if you receive this letter by e-mail.) Please keep this schedule for future reference.

Our meetings continue to be held at Stillwater’s Lowell Inn. Note that if you attend a meeting without making a dinner reservation in advance, the cost of your meal will be $27.00. Advance dinner reservations are very important. We must provide an accurate meal count to the Inn so that its restaurant can prepare a sufficient number of meals for our meetings.

Start the year right by making your annual dues payment -- $20 for individuals and $25 for couples and families. Your dues help cover the costs of our speaker program, donations to various Civil War related activities and sites, and the costs of mailing monthly newsletters. Finally, if you receive our newsletters by regular mail, please consider converting to e-mail delivery. Send your e-mail address to Ned Gordon at .

Join the Roundtable on Monday, August 24, when it begins its 2015-16schedule ofprograms with the presentation by Nick K. Adams.
