Job Description

Fire Captain

GENERAL NATURE OF WORK

Performs skilled fire-fighting work involving the operation of mechanical apparatus and equipment in the protection of life and property through prevention and extinguishing of fires.

Work involves responsibility for supervising the activities of a fire emergency at the scene of a fire to ensure company safety and the efficient and effective extinguishments of the fire until relieved by Assistant Fire Chief or Fire Chief. Employees of this class are responsible for dispatching fire fighters, assuring that vehicles and equipment are in proper operating condition, training new and current personnel, and supervising an assigned shift of fire fighting personnel. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Fire Chief. Work is reviewed by observation and through the examination of oral and written reports.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Act as shift supervisor; supervises and directs fire fighters at fires and emergency scenes until relieved by Assistant Fire Chief or Fire Chief.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Employees are subject to inclement weather, hazardous conditions, and strenuous physical exertion when fighting fires.

PUBLIC CONTACT

Considerable contact with other employees and the general public, often involving problem-solving situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Extreme physical demands when fighting fires and also high demands in station and training duties. The individual must be able to lift 125 pounds of gear while climbing ladders and pulling charged hoses through adverse conditions. Must also comply with Georgia Law 92A-2607.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Essential Job Functions:

Supervises an assigned shift of fire fighters which includes providing direction and guidance to subordinate personnel, assuring that volunteers are dispatched to fire scene or emergency scene in a timely manner and assuring that vehicles and equipment are in proper operating condition.

May drive assigned fire fighting apparatus to and from scenes as required.

Supervises and directs fire fighters at fires and emergency scenes.

Informs the Chief of any unusual problems or situations occurring on assigned shift.

Ensures that stations and grounds are properly maintained.

Ensures the proper functioning of all Fire Department equipment.

Assists fire fighters with duties, fighting fires, connecting hoses, and operating the pump and fire apparatus, etc.

Extricates victims of accidents when necessary.

Reviews and complete necessary reports and logs as required.

Reviews timecards and ensures that overtime is reviewed and approved by the Chief.

Trains new and current personnel.

Maintains current State Certification through continuing education

Assists superior officers in making presentations to schools and civic organizations.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of basic fire technology principles and practices.

Good knowledge of the street systems, physical layout of the city and location of fire hydrants.

Good knowledge of the operating and mechanical principles involved in the operation of fire apparatus and equipment.

Skill and dexterity in the operation and light maintenance of fire trucks, pumps, power ladders, and other equipment that is assigned.

Ability to supervise and train personnel and to direct them under emergency situations.

Ability to respond quickly to changing situation under emergency working relationships with employees, government officials, and the general public.

Strength and ability to do prolonged manual and mechanical work under adverse conditions.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

The following standards express the minimum background of training and experience DESIRABLE as evidence of an applicant’s ability to qualify for positions of this class. Other training or experience, if evaluated as equivalent, may qualify the applicant for the position>

Completion of a standard high school course of study, or its recognized equivalent.

Considerable experience as a fire fighter

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid Class B Operator’s License issued by the State of Georgia

Must meet Georgia Law 92A-2607 requirements.

Georgia Law 92A-2608 requires that any person appointed to a position in this classification:

“shall satisfactorily complete Unit FDC 101 of the Georgia Firefighters Standards Course of Study of the Georgia Fire Academy within twelve months after being appointed.”
