for destroying the sacred burial ground of Standing Rock Sioux whose rights to those lands are protected by US Treaty,
for seizing the private property of US Citizens along the route of the DA Pipeline, some of which had been their family’s hard-won, hard-worked high-production crop land for generations, using alleged illegitimate “eminent domain” to benefit a handful of oil and pipeline corporate profiteers and their investors,
for threatening the most productive crop lands of these states along theroute of the pipeline,carrying destructive Bakkan crude oil, which isvulnerable to leak. The impact of those leakswould threaten hunger and food insecurity in our nation at a time when climate change already threatens our food supply,
for threatening to despoil the long term precious resource of water, already vulnerable fromirresponsible industrial farming practices and global warming.

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom US Section declares a state of emergency with the current attack on the constitutional right to free speech for Standing Rock Sioux, their supporters and journalists, which was and is carried out with an increasingly militarized police, perpetuating a culture of fear and polarization.

A warrant for the arrest of Amy Goodman, theDemocracy Now! host, was issued in Morton County for her “invasion” on private property on September 3, while videotaping the security guards and their dogs, leashed but on the offense. “This is an unacceptable violation of freedom of the press,” Goodman said in her statement after police accused her of criminal trespass.

We support Amy Goodman’s independent reporting, as one of the last independent journalists who speaks truth to power and informs Americansthat our freedom to speak out is daily being erased through the egregious Citizens United Supreme Court decision and the corporate takeover of mass media.

We condemnthe “attack dog” mentality let loose on peaceful protesters and First Nation peoples in denial of their human rights and in violation of their guaranteed Treaty Rights. When North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple called on National Guard troops to assist private security guards who attacked the Standing Rock Sioux and their supporters demonstrating against the destruction of their sacred burial groundsand protectingMother Earth he was putting private profit ahead of Constitutional rights and the long term security of vulnerable resources.

The real criminal behavior was performed by private security using attack dogs to intimidate the non-violent protestors and journalists who practice the right of free speech, a replayof the iconic use of attack dogs used against civil rights protesters in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963,

In the spring of 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote from his Birmingham jail cell: “…I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

The women and men of the Women’s International League of Peace & Freedom will not sit idly by while the current attack on the constitutional right to free speech and freedom of assembly is violated.
