June 9th – Field Trip: The BioPod at the John Volken Academy in Surrey (Invitation Only)

June 10th – Conference: SUB at the University of the Fraser Valley (Abbotsford)

Conference Description:

Hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) and the Agriculture Centre of Excellence (ACE), the conference will bring together a consortium of academics, industry professionals, government officials, NGOs, funders, partners, and students to discuss the ways in which urban food systems can be developed securely and sustainably. The conference on June 10th will host keynote speaker Dr. Alex Awiti of the East African Institute at Aga Khan University and consist of four sessions: Global Ideas; Research and Development; Industry and Innovation; and Funding and Partnerships. Preceding the conference, select participants will be invited to attend a field trip on June 9th to the BioPod, a UFV agriculture training and research demonstration greenhouse at the John Volken Academy. Combined with the development of innovative technologies, the demonstration greenhouse provides valuable agriculture skills training and certification opportunities for students in addictions recovery.

Conference Objectives:

·  Bringing together a consortium of academics, industry professionals, government officials, NGOs, funders, partners, and students to discuss opportunities and challenges in the areas of “food security, food systems, and food rights”

·  Showcasing and promoting Queen Elizabeth Scholarship opportunities, the East Africa Internship Program, as well as QEScholars’ food systems research in Tanzania and Kenya

·  Exploring future partnership/ funding opportunities for the development of sustainable food systems and technology innovation
