Lab 2 Installing Windows 7

In this lab you will perform the following tasks

  • Install Windows 7
  • Determining the Performance of the Computer
  • Checking Hardware Compatibility
  • Running Easy Transfer
  • Updating Windows 7
  • Installing Anti-virus Software
  • Install Microsoft Office 2003

Installing Windows 7

  1. Start you computer and insert the Windows 7 installation DVD in to the CD/DVD drive.
  2. In a moment the Install Windows screen will appear click on Install now.
  3. On the Get important updates for installation screen select Go on line to get the latest updates… A screen will appear indicating that the install program is searching for updates
  4. On the Please read the licensing terms page check the box that indicates that you accept the licensing terms and click Next.
  5. On the Which type of installation do you want page select Custom (remember you cannot upgrade from Windows XP).
  6. On the Where do you want to install Windows page make sure that Disk 0Partition 1: (C:) is selected and click next.

Question 1: What does the warning message say after you click on next?

  1. ClickOK, The install process will begin. This will take a while to complete but not as long as the XP install. Your computer will shut down and restart andcontinue the process of installing Windows 7.
  2. When the installation is complete a screen will appear asking you to select Country of origin, Time and currency and Keyboard layout, click next.
  3. For your user name type Student7xx, for the computer name type computer7xx and click next.
  4. For the password type P@ssw0rd and for the hint type CIS 221 password, clickNext.
  5. For this installation you will not use a product key (normally you would enter the product key supplied with the Windows 7 disk), deselect Automatically activate Windows when on line.
  6. Click next.
  7. On the next screen selectAsk me latterclick next.
  8. On the next screen select Central time (US and Canada), click next.
  9. On the next screen select Work network.
  10. Windows 7 will go through the final setup and the display the desk top.
  11. Remove the DVD from the drive.

Determining the Performance of the Computer.

  1. Click on the start button and select Control Panel.
  2. In the View by dropdown box select Large icons.
  3. In the control panel click on Performance Information and tools.
  4. Click on Rate this Computer, a window will open indicating the progress of the rating.

Question 2: Fill in the following table.

Question 3: What is the minimum and maximum score a computer can have?

  1. Close all windows..

Checking Hardware Compatibility

  1. Click on the start button and select Control Panel.
  1. In the View by dropdown box select Large(if not already set) icons.
  2. In the control panel double click on Administrative tools.
  3. In the Administrative tools window click on Computer management.
  4. Expand Device Manager.

Question 5: In the device manager is there a device that was not recognized by the install and what is its location (hint look at the properties of the device)?

Question 6: What is the status of the drivers and the code?

Question 7: What suggestion is give for correcting the problem?

  1. Click on Update Driver.

Question 8: In the window that appears what does Search automatically do?

  1. In the window that appears click on Search automatically…

Question 9: What was the result of the search and the suggestion given?

  1. Close the search results window.
  2. Close the Unknown Device properties window.
  3. In device manager click on Disk Management.

Question 10: Did the Data (L:) drive survive the conversion?

  1. Expand Local User and Groups
  2. Click on Users

Question 11: What users are present?

  1. Click on Groups

Question 12: List the groups created when Windows 7 was installed.

  1. Close all windows

Running Easy Transfer

  1. From the start button select All Programs, Accessories, system Tools and click on Windows Easy Transfer.
  2. When the Welcome to Easy Transfer wizard appears click Next.
  3. In the next windows select An external hard disk or USB flash drive.
  4. In the next window select This is my new computer.
  5. In the next window click Yes.
  6. Open Data (L:) drive.
  7. Highlight Windows Easy Transferand click Open.
  8. Enter the Password (P@ssw0rd) and click next, the transfer will start.
  9. Make sure all of the selections are checked in Choose what to transfer to this computer window.
  10. Click Transfer and the transfer of information will start.
  11. On the next page make sure the Transfer Report tab is selected.
  12. Click on Details under documents.
  13. Click on Save Report.
  14. Accept the default name for the file and save it(note its location)

Question 13:Upload the file you saved to D2L.

Question 14: Under Program setting details what set of programs did all of the users have transferred?

  1. Click on the Programs report tab.

Question 15:What corporation had the most programs installed on the old computer?

  1. Close the Easy Transfer Reports window
  2. Close the Easy Transfer window.
  3. Restart your computer now.
  4. When your computer restarts you will see all of the users transferred, Log on to Student7xx.

Updating Windows 7

  1. From the Start button select Control Panel
  2. In the Control panel click on Windows update
  3. On the Windows Update page click on the link Let me choose my settings.
  4. On the Choose how Windows can install updates page click on the down arrow next to Please select and option.
  5. From the list select Download updates but let me choose whether to install them.
  6. Enable Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates.
  7. Click OK
  8. Windows 7 will check for updates

Question 16:How many important and optional updates are available?

  1. Click on the link xx Important updates are available.

Question 17: What are the two largest updates on the list that appears and how big is each?

  1. Click on the back arrow.
  2. Click on Install Updates.
  3. Accept the licensing agreement and click Finish, the update installation will start.

Question 18: Pay close attention to the install and answer the following questionduring the preparing to install phase what is created?

  1. When the update installation is completed click onrestart your computer.
  2. Log in as Student7xx with your password.
  3. From the Start button select Control Panel
  4. In the Control panel click on Windows update
  5. On the Windows Update page click on the link Change Settings.
  6. On the Choose how Windows can install updates page click on the down arrow next to Please select and option.
  7. From the list select Check for updates but let me chose whether to download and install them.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Close the Control panel window.

Installing Anti-virus Software

In this exercise you will install the AVG free anti-virus program.

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. In the address line type .
  3. Do a search for AVG free.
  4. Look for a hit that says “AVG Anit-Virus Free Addition – Free Software Download and software…” and at the bottom of the hit the address is (the address may change slightly, make sure that you are going to the cnet site for the download) download.cnet.com/AVG..free../3000-2239_4-10320142.html. Click on that link.
  5. Click on the Download Now button.
  6. At the top of the Internet Explorer window you will see a yellow bar warning you about the download, click on it and select Download file.
  7. On the Download Security Warning dialog box click on Run.
  8. On the Internet Explorer Security Warning click on Yes
  9. Close Internet Explorer.
  10. On the first screens for the AVG Download Manager click Next
  11. On the second screen select Install under Anti-virus free and clickNext, the download will start.
  12. After the download is complete Accept the Licensing Agreement.
  13. On the next screen make sure Standard Installation is selected and click on Next.
  14. On Activate your AVG Free License click Next
  15. On the next screen Do not install the AVG security tool bar click Next.
  16. The install will start.
  17. On the next screen click Finish.
  18. In the AVG Optimize Scan window select Optimize scanning now
  19. A box will appear in the notification area indicating the optimized scan has started and then it will disappear.
  20. Wait until the scan is completed.
  21. Closeany open Windows.

Install Microsoft Office 2003

  1. Insert the Microsoft Office 2003 disk in the CD/DVD drive.
  2. In the AutoPlay window click on Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer
  3. Double-click on the Office folder
  4. Double-click PRO11.MSI
  5. In the Microsoft Office 2003 Setup windows click Next on the User information screen
  6. On the next screen selectCustom Install and click next.
  7. Make sure that onlyWord, Excel and PowerPoint are selected, click Next.
  8. On the summary screen make sure you have only selected Word, Excel and PowerPoint and click Install.
  9. Click Yes in the Warning box the install will start and indicate the progress of the install.
  10. On the next screen click Finish.
  11. Close all windows.
  12. Remove the CD from the drive.
  13. Shutdown Windows 7.
