3rd 6 Weeks Vocab

Intro

Circuit = Established path or conduit of electricity.

Optics = Manner of manipulating light after it leaves the source.

Modeling = the revealing of form of an object through the pattern of highlight and shadow.

Batten = Horizontal pipe on which lighting instruments or scenery can be hung.

Hang = To secure a lighting instrument to a grid or batten in the theater.

1 History / Electricity

Volt = The measurement of the potential energy for an electric field. Voltage causes an electric current in an electrical conductor.

Ampere / Amp = A unit of electric current, or amount of electric charge per second.

Current = The flow (movement) of electrons within an electric field.

Resistance = The degree to which an object opposes an electric current moving through it.

Potential = The energy difference between two points of a non-moving electric field.

2 Color

Intensity = The level of brightness of a light.

Distribution = The direction, shape and size or quality (diffuse or clear)

Movement = The timed change in light level or the physical movement of light sources.

Filter = A material that allows certain frequencies of light to pass through, while preventing the passage of others.

Primary = A fundamental color that cannot be made by mixing any other two colors. All other colors are mixed from primary colors.

3 Instruments

Wash = Lighting source which illuminate broad areas of the stage (not specific).

Lamp = The name of what is often called a light bulb.

Lens = Used to redirect the spreading rays of light coming from the source to the reflector.

Practical = A light onstage that is the actual source.

Focus = The adjustment of the size or shape of a light beam.

4 Board

Cue = One specific lighting look and its fade time.

Channel = A lighting control path. The virtual control of dimmers.

Patch = The assignment of circuits to dimmers.

Black out = Instantaneous dousing of all stage lights.

Preset = Setting the controls of an apparatus prior to use.

5 Documentation

Grid = A collection of beams that provide a working platform above the stage floor.

Light Plot = Blueprint of where lighting instruments are hung and circuited.

Key = Accent or highlight on the actor’s face, usually from the direction of the motivating light for the scene.

Fill = Wash or soft light that fills in the light on the face from the directionopposite the key light.

Dimmer = Apparatus for regulating the flow of electric current causing a light to be more or less bright.
