Ministry Trainee at Church by the Bay, Morecambe

Church by the Bay

Church by the Bay is a small but growing, independent, evangelical church in Morecambe, on the coast of Lancashire. It is a church plant, started in September 2011 from Moorlands, Lancaster.

Morecambe is a beautiful place that needs regeneration. There is much work to be done here amongst the variety of people groups that broadly come under the old ‘working class’ label as we strive to bring real regeneration through the gospel.

Our mission is: to go into the world - and first Morecambe and the Bay area - and make disciples by speaking the good news of Jesus, and so gather people into God’s Church to bring glory to Him.

We meet on Sunday mornings - at 10:30am for church in a local primary school. We have around 65 people made up of all ages: Christians, new Christians, and some not Christians, hearing God’s Word with us.

On Sundaysevenings we also have regular training meetings (preaching team and Bible teaching team) and a monthly Prayer Tea for the whole Church family, including the children. On Wednesdays, we have Real Food(our small groups). We spend time in the Bible, applying and praying so that we grow together and reach out to our town together.

We run a weekly Pop up café, and a monthly Dads Groupto grow relationships with our community and help ‘bridge the gap’ between our evangelistic events (Sunday Funday, Christmas events, kids’ events, pub quiz) and our courses (Christianity Explored andTheWorld We All Want)and Church. Wealso run Christians Against Poverty Money courses.

Many of the church family are involved in different things in the community with the aim of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with the people they meet.

Ministry Trainee Role

We are looking for a Ministry Trainee to join us for one-year (potentially extending to a second year) from 1 September 2018. The Ministry Trainee role is about being trained for future serving, whether formally or informally in the local church. This position is ideal for someone considering the possibility of full-time Bible-teaching ministry in the future.Take a look at our website:

The role is split into three and roughly one third of the week is spent doing each.

Training

Formal training is provided by the North West Partnership Training Course ( This course covers Biblical theology (how the Bible fits together, centred on Christ), exposition (how to teach the Bible), doctrine and practical ministry, as well as an opportunity for practice Bible talks with feedback.

In-house training is provided through staff meetings, including help for Bible teaching and feedback, reading books together, Bible Teaching team and preaching team. Our own training covers: Bible handling skills; Bible teaching skills; doctrine; and pastoral issues.

Ministry Trainees will be mentored by the Pastor, or Families Worker, as appropriate. Staff meetings include weekly lunch together. There is plenty of time for informal learning and observing as we share our lives together.

Bible Teaching

Ministry Trainees have the opportunity to put their training into practice and teach God’s Word in a variety of ways. This might include leading Sunday meetings, occasional preaching, children’s work, youth work, leading adult Bible studies, music, and internationals. As well as opportunities to meet and share God’s Word at a 1-1 level. We also ask Trainees to meet non-Christians as part of a community or interest group.

All the Bible teaching opportunities will be discussed by the Pastor and the Ministry Trainee and consideration taken of gifts, experience, enthusiasm and whether they are considering becoming a pastor in the future.

Practical Ministry

There are practical and administrative tasks which may include: setting up on Sunday mornings, Church administration and helping to organize events.

Ministry Trainee Person
