CHSS Policy on Transfers of Degree Programme

with effect from Session 2015/2016

In an effort to provide wider flexibility and an enhanced student experience, the College Undergraduate Learning and Teaching Committee recently approved the following policy covering transfers of degree programme in CHSS:

  • Primary consideration remains academic achievement(i.e. all 120 credits passed).
  • From session 2015/2016 the College will consider requests from students who have failed no more than 40 credits of study in their current programme.
  • Failure of any course required for entry into the requested new programme will not be permitted.
  • Further criteria employed will berelevant special circumstances, fit with intended curricula, space available on the programme into which the student wishes to transfer, personal statementsand fee status.
  • The College reserves the right to approve or reject transfer requests on all or any of the above criteria.
  • In addition, no student transferring degree programme will be permitted more than one additional year of study.

Transferinto the first year of a degree programme:

All students accepted for transfer into a new degree programme, who are required to re-start in the first year of that programme, must satisfy the necessary academic criteria and meet the offer threshold for entry to the programme in the year they were first admitted to the University. In addition:

RUK students:

Require agreement from their funding body for one extra year of study.

Overseas students:

Confirm that they are able to meet the costs of an additional year of study. These students are also subject to UK V&I requirements and their maximum period of study, in most cases, is limited to five years.

Scots/EU students:

Require SAAS agreement for one additional year of funding. One further constraint for this group is availability of SAAS funded places. The change of policy should allow the College to approve the majority oftheserequests.

Transfer into subsequent years of a degree programme:

  1. Students who wish to transfer into the second year of a degree programme must meet the following criteria:
  • Satisfy the offer threshold for admission to that programme in the year in which they were first admitted to the University.
  • Have been enrolled, in their first year of study,on core course(s) amounting to no fewer than 40 credits in the programme into which they wish to transfer.
  • Have completed all compulsory requirements for entry to Honours in the new degree subject by the end of second year.
  1. Students who wish to transfer into the third year of a degree programme may do so if they satisfy entry to Honours requirements.

Note: The offer threshold for entry to the new degree programme will not be applied to students in this category.

Transfers of Degree Programme: Powers devolved to Schools

Transfers within a School and Inter-School Transfers where they do not extend the length of the period of study

The following General Undergraduate Regulations apply:

Regulation 8:

When selecting courses, students must comply with the pre-requisite, co-requisite and prohibited combination requirements shown in the Degree Programme Table, unless a concession is approved by the relevant Head of College.
And
Regulation 9:
No student will be admitted to a degree programme or a course that is part of their degree programme more than two weeks after the start of the semester in which the course is taught without the permission of the Head of College.

With the above two Regulations in mind, Schools are free to consider transfer requests from students if they are within a School and cross-School where they do not extend the total length of the student’s period of study at the University at any point in the year. However, successful transfers can only take effect at the start of the following academic session. When considering such requests, Schools must also take into account achievement at University and prior to entry, relevant special circumstances, fit with intended curricula, students’ personal statements, the overall number of places available for transfers, and the particular student number constraints of subject areas.
