Announcing RASRural Ambassador Winner

Last weekend in Hawkes Bay the finals of the RAS Rural Ambassador were held at the annual RAS Conference.

Run under the auspices of the Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) and New Zealand Young Farmers(NZYF), the Award recognizes excellence and is offered annually to young people, under the age of 30 years, who are involved in the A&P Show movement in some way. The emphasis on their role in the show movement has transpired from the involvement in a Trans Tasman Competition with our Australian cousins. Heading in to it’s sixth year, the Trans Tasman competitionoffers a great opportunity for young New Zealanders to shape up against the Australians and it takes what was essentially a “local” competition to that next level.

The Australian show community have a huge emphasis on youth and for the New Zealand Show movement to remain a forward thinking, positive organisation they also need the contribution of youth. While the Australians may appear to have the long-term involvement advantage the New Zealand entrants have shown they have got what it takes. In 2012, Tim van de Molen from Hamilton, won the Trans Tasman Competition and in the following year, Cam Lewis came second.

Four finalists squared off against each other this year – Georgia Davies from North Canterbury, Tryphena Carter from Riversdale,Zach Mounsey from Otorohanga and Ben Burgess from Whangarei. All finalists were very impressive young people in their own right; however there could only be one winner and that was Tryphena Carter.

Tryphena is twenty eight years old and currently employed as a valuer for Telfer Young in Otago. Her interests and accomplishment are wide and varied ranging from an RAS Equestrian Judge to the secretary of the Rakaia Ploughing Match Association. Tryphena will represent the RAS of NZ in the Australasian Competition to be held in Tasmania in 2016.

Competitions of this prestige cannot be run without the assistance of loyal sponsors. Thanks must go to Franklin A&P Society and the Upper Clutha A&P Society. Thanks also to NZ Young Farmers who are loyal supporters of this Award.
