APOSTOLIC LETTER
PORTA FIDEI
OF
BENEDICT XVI
FOR THE INDICTION OF THE YEAR OF FAITH
“Confessing with the lips indicates in turn that faith implies public testimony and commitment. A Christian may never think of belief as a private act. Faith is choosing to stand with the Lord so as to live with him. This “standing with him” points towards an understanding of the reasons for believing. Faith, precisely because it is a free act, also demands social responsibility for what one believes. The Church on the day of Pentecost demonstrates with utter clarity this public dimension of believing and proclaiming one’s faith fearlessly to every person. It is the gift of the Holy Spirit that makes us fit for mission and strengthens our witness, making it frank and courageous..”
Our Holy Father teaches us that we need to stand up for what we believe in! This final weekend before Christmas is a perfect opportunity to demonstrate that our Faith is not hidden corner of our lives, but something to openly manifest and joyfully share. These past days we have seen so many examples of tragedy and meaningless destruction - what better occasion to acknowledge that the answers and strength we are seeking for lie in the Little Child who is Christ, God come to earth to save us precisely from the evil behind these things. To stand firm in confidence, refuse to give in to fear, to remain hopeful and strong, are all signs that we believe in Christ born in Bethlehem, and that He is more than a children’s story to us. As we go on to celebrate the holidays, we can deliberately make sure they are focused on honoring Jesus, worshipping the God who makes all this happy and joyful, and a renewal of commitment to living His life for we know He is the God of everlasting life. Not giving in to pure materialism, to not settle for just passing holiday cheer, to not let all the glitter and greed of the season take precedence - these are all acts that say we believe in God and we want others to know!
As we approach the celebration of Christmas this could be a good time to fulfill one of our parish Year of Faith challenges: invite someone to come to Mass with you! There is no better day to join together in the worship of God than when we celebrate His Birth.
May the Lord grant you all the most blessed, grace filled and happy Christmas!
THANK YOU Mr. & Mrs. Victor Carbe, Jr. for the two beautiful trees in the sanctuary area this weekend. They donated them in memory of parents,
Mr. & Mrs. Victor Carbe, Sr.
There will be NO Bible Study this Tuesday - it will resume on January 15, after the holidays. Fr. Finn’s class Know your Catholic Faith has conluded for the season - it will resume again the first Friday of Lent.
