THE COLLECT FOR THE DAY

Almighty God,
in Christ you make all things new:
transform the poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace, and in the renewal of our lives make known your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen

READING Isaiah 49.1-7

Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The Lord called me before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb he named me. He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, ‘You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.’ But I said, ‘I have laboured in vain,
I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the Lord, and my reward with my God.’ And now the Lord says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honoured in the sight of the Lord, and my God has become my strength - he says, ‘It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.’ Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One,

to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the slave of rulers, ‘Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.’

PSALM 40.1-12

1 I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry.
2 He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.
4 Happy are those who make the Lord their trust, who do not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after false gods.
5 You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts towards us; none can compare with you. Were I to proclaim and tell of them, they would be more than can be counted.
6 Sacrifice and offering you do not desire, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required.
7 Then I said, ‘Here I am; in the scroll of the book it is written of me.
8 I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.’
9 I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; see, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O Lord.
10 I have not hidden your saving help within my heart, I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.
11 Do not, O Lord, withhold your mercy from me; let your steadfast love and your faithfulness keep me safe for ever.
12 For evils have encompassed me without number; my iniquities have overtaken me, until I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me.

GOSPEL John.1.29-42

The next day he saw Jesus coming towards him and declared, ‘Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, “After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.” I myself did not know him; but
I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.’ And John testified, ‘I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, “He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.’ The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, ‘Look, here is the Lamb of God!’ The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’ They said to him, ‘Rabbi’ (which translated means Teacher), ‘where are you staying?’ He said to them, ‘Come and see.’ They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
He first found his brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas’ (which is translated Peter).’

PARISH NOTICES

Candlemas Service - This service will be held at Old St. George’s Church in Esher on Sunday 29 January at 6pm. Our Candlemas celebration recalls the day on which
Jesus was presented in the Temple, when he was offered to the Father and shown
to his people. As a sign of his coming among us, his mother was purified, and in
our celebration we offer ourselves for cleansing. We celebrate both the joy of Jesus' coming and his searching judgement, looking back to the day of his birth and forward to the coming days of his passion. All are welcome to join us for a warm and atmospheric evening. The Christ Church choir will be singing.

Youth Group (Year 5+) - It’s New Year Quiz Night for the Youth Group this afternoon. Meet in the Eden Building at Esher Church School at 6pm. For more information contact at .

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity - This is traditionally observed from the 18 to 25 January - the octave of St. Peter and St. Paul. Copies of an A5 booklet to help us observe this week of prayer amidst the busyness of our lives are available from the back of church or may be downloaded from the ‘Latest News’ section of our parish website.

First Communion Course - We will be running a First Communion Course for all those interested who are Yr 4 upwards. The course will help children and young people to see the significance of communion to the Christian faith and how it can be an important part of their individual faith as well. It is a four session course, running every Wednesday from 1 to 22 March inclusive, and will be held directly after school in one of the classrooms at Esher Church School. After completing the course participants will be invited to receive communion on Sunday 26 March at the 10.30am service. Please do contact Nate for
more information or to sign up at . Thank you.

Help for the homeless during cold weather - The weather remains cold with
night temperatures dropping below zero. During this time Elmbridge Council has a responsibility via the ‘Severe Weather Emergency Protocol’ (SWEP) to secure emergency provision for people who are street homeless in the Elmbridge area and have nowhere to stay. If you become aware of anybody in need of help the council can be contacted
at or 01372 474590 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 4.45pm). Outside these times contact the emergency duty team on 0300 1237719.
