The Hobbit

Summative Assessment—100 points

Choose one of the following:

  1. On Friday, December 2, take a test which includes 30 multiple choice questions (2 points each) and an essay question (40 points). The essay question will ask you to discuss one of the stages of Bilbo’s hero’s journey and support your discussion with 3 pieces of textual evidence and explanations of each one. Your essay must be multi-paragraph, organized, and grammatically and mechanically correct.
  1. Create a cookbook for the unexpected party at the beginning of the novel. Your cookbook must include the following: At least 5 recipes with pictures and quotes from the novel to go with each one. Your quotes do not have to be specifically about the recipe but must be relevant in some way and in correct MLA format. You must include a works cited page (bibliography) at the end of your book. Use the internet for research but you must make the book your own, not just copying and pasting. Finally, you must prepare one of your recipes to share with the class on Friday, December 2nd. This project may be done individually or with a partner (Partner does not have to be in your class period.)
  1. Create a map of Bilbo’s journey, including all the important stops/events along the way.(I will provide a checklist with these.) Your map must include pictures and quotes from the novel for each event. Your map must be creative and textually correct. It may be presented as a poster, prezi, etc. This project may be done individually or with a partner (Partner does not have to be in your class period) and will be presented to your class on December 2nd.
  1. Create a timeline of Bilbo’s Archetypal Hero’s Journey. Your timeline must include all of thestages of the hero’s journey with a picture, a quote, and an explanation of how Bilbo experiences each one. (I will provide a checklist with the stages of the hero’s journey.) This may be presented as a poster, powerpoint, prezi, etc. This project may be done individually or with a partner (Partner does not have to be in your class period) and will be presented to your class on December 2nd.

*ALL ASSESSMENTS WILL BE EVALUATED AND GRADED ON NEATNESS, CREATIVITY, CORRECT KNOWLEDGE OF THE NOVEL, AND CORRECT USE OF ENGLISH (SPELLING, GRAMMAR, PUNCTUATION, ETC.).
