Welcome to Choir! Choir is a fun and exciting way to gain many valuable skills for life! We will sing, perform alone and with others, improvise, compose, read and notate music, listen, analyze and evaluate music performances and understand relationships between music and other disciplines, history and culture. I hope that you come away with a new appreciation for yourself, your classmates, music and the world around you!

As this IS an academic class, you are expected to practice and study just as you would for any other class. Here is a breakdown of what you will be graded on:

Daily Participation 25%

Participation means following the class expectations of behavior- 3 pts. Available each day

You can lose points for not following class expectations or not having all materials needed to learn in class (instrument, pencil, music binder)

When there is a problem I will acknowledge the problem and give you a chance to work it out. If the problem behavior continues I will subtract a point. If there is a loss of 2 or more points in one period I will contact a parent so together with the student we can work on a solution to the problem.

  • Be respectful
  • Be on time and prepared to learn (pencil/music) Missing items is an automatic point loss.
  • Encourage others
  • Good communication with teacher, parents and each other.
  • Be positive and have fun

Concerts 25%-You are expected to be at all performances. As choir is a performing art it is necessary that all participants rehearse and perform with the ensemble. If you must miss a concert because of an illness or family emergency please let me know as soon as possible. It is also expected that all choir members assist with set up, tear down, and STAY for the entire concert.

Concerts are schedule far in advance. Occasionally a performance may come up with short notice and I will inform you as soon as possible of any new concert dates.

Practice 25%Students are expected to practice and have their musical assignments prepared for class. Some lunch time rehearsals will happen throughout the year so that all choral students have a chance to practice together.

Performance or written tests and assignments 25%Each trimester there will be a least one test. This may be a singing test, a written test, or even an oral report. All students are required to perform a song and solfege as a final exam by the end of the school year.
