Mrs. Wyatt’s 6th Grade Science Syllabus

Welcome to 6th grade science! I am excited to launch into the 2016-2017 school year.

Professional Biography - I graduated from Saint Martin's College (now known as Saint Martin's University) with two degrees. Iearneda Bachelor of Artsin Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing& Managementand a second degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Middle Level Math & Science.

I have been teaching in the North Thurston Public School district since the 2004 -2005 school year. I first started teaching at Woodland Elementary as a Science Specialist.I next movedto Pleasant Glade Elementary to teach 5th grade for nine years. Now, I ama 6th grade science teacher at Chinook Middle School. The 2012-2013 school year, I was honored to be named the Washington State Science Teacher of the Year for Elementary Teachers.

My goals this year will be:

·  To give students the academic and social skills they need to progress to seventh grade.

·  To provide a hands-on, supportive, engaging, and fun classroom environment.

·  To help students make new friends and discover new interests.

·  To cultivate critical thinkers and contributing citizens for a better world!

Science Classroom Expectations:

·  Follow lab instructions

·  Use equipment carefully

·  Clean up and return all materials and equipment

Curriculum – We will start the year with Earth History. On October 7th, we will take a field trip to Mt. St. Helens. If any parents/guardians would like to volunteer, please make sure you have a volunteer form on file with the district and contact me as soon as possible. In January, we will start our Weather and Water unit and in April we will be learning about Earth in Space.

Homework - Students are required to come to school prepared by having their homework fully complete. If students have questions about their homework, they may come see me during study hall and I will more than gladly clear up any misconceptions they may have. Please check my webpage daily to see when assignments have been assigned and when they are due. My webpage is updated each week with the most current homework assignments.

Grading – I will be assessing students using a standards-based grading system. They will be graded on a variety of assessments (quizzes, tests, etc), lab work, daily assignments, and professionalism. Please stay up-to-date by logging into Family Access to view current grades. If you have any questions about grading, please contact me.
