China Medical University Implementation Regulations of English Proficiency Requirements

China Medical University Implementation Regulations of English Proficiency Requirements for Graduation

Article 1 China Medical University (CMU) hereby drafts the Implementation Regulations of English Proficiency Requirements for Graduation (hereinafter referred to as "The Regulations") in order to assist students achieving English proficiency and making connections with the world.

Article 2 Students enrolled in Bachelor's program of Schools of Medicine and Chinese Medicine since Fall 2003-2005, andstudents enrolled in Bachelor’s program since Fall 2006, and all students enrolled since Fall 2007 are applicable to The Regulations.

Article 3 Before graduation, students are required to complete English proficiency supporting courses prescribed by CMU, or acquire any valid English proficiency certificate approved by CMU.

Article 4 Criterion for qualificationsof English proficiency and supporting courses are as follows:

  1. Students enrolled in Bachelor's program of Schools of Medicine and Chinese Medicine since Fall 2003-2005:

a)Please refer to students enrolled in Bachelor’s program since Fall 2006 for qualification for English proficiency.

b)Intramural supporting courses: should students fail to pass English proficiency test stipulated by respective departments are they allowed to complete minimum course hours of asynchronous online English learning course.

c)Students should complete Tell ME MORE online course and score 4500 points before graduation.

  2. Other students should use Longman’s self-teach program. Passing grades are determined by: A. Participation (20%), B. Review Tests (20%), and C. Competency Test (60%).

Article 5 Implementation:

Article 6 Description:

  1. Required English proficiency course with zero credit is applicable to asynchronous online English learning course.
  2. Grading standard for English proficiency course is P/N (pass/non-pass).
  3. Course hours of asynchronous online English learning course cannot apply for credit exemptions in English-related and general education courses whatsoever.
  4. The Language Education Center is entitled to implement asynchronous online English learning course and intramural English proficiency test.
  5. For GEPT, passing both 1st and 2nd stages is required.
  6. Students who have passed standardized English proficiency teststwo years prior to enrolment to CMUwill be deemed as passing CMU English proficiency requirements.
  7. Students enrolled since Fall 2008 are required to complete their intramural English supporting courses one year prior to graduation or internship.Students are advised taking English proficiency tests outside CMU during the first few years. However, students enrolled before Fall 2007 are not restricted to the aforementioned requirement.
  8. For intramural English supporting measures and courses (including course hours and review tests), the efficacy for graduate students begins from the day of enrollment and first-year for preliminary students.For PhD students, the efficacy starts after passing comprehensive examinations or after providing English proficiency certificate equivalent to that of GEPT advanced level.
  9. Students from the Bachelor’s program who passed the intramural English supporting measures cannot use such certificate as qualification of English proficiency when admitted to the Master program; nor graduate students to that of PhD program.
  10. Foreign students graduated from countries where English is an official languageis deemed qualified for The Regulations.
  11. Students who have passed standardized English proficiency tests two years prior to enrolment to CMU or during school should submit valid original certificates to department offices for documentation and record.
  12. Foreign and Two-year degree program students are exempted from The Regulations.
  13. Students who did not pass intramural English proficiency test are required to attend English remedial courses at least for one semester. Students who successfully pass the assessment made by the instructor are recognized as fulfilling The Regulations.

Article 7 Students from Bachelor’s program who, with desirable grades, scoredTOEFL IBT 79, or ITP 550, or CBT 213 and above will have the priority of being recruited to CMU Elite Project, eligible for exchange students and study tours.

Article 8 Subsidy for passing English proficiency tests outside CMU:

  1. Students who sign up for TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, Cambridge Main Suite, GEPT or other CMU approved English proficiency tests are eligible to apply.
  2. Amount of subsidy:

a)Subsidizes 1/2 registration fee for students already signed up for the test.

b)Students who reach the proficiency standard required by respective department will receive full registration subsidy.

c)Students who sign up for the second English proficiency test during different academic year, and reach the proficiency standard required by respective department will receive a subsidy of 1/2 registration fee.

  1. Students receiving certificates within three months should apply to Academic Affairs for subsidy during each semester. Required documents include student ID card, valid original certificate and a duplicate, original copy of registration fee.However, each student should only apply once for every academic year.

Article 9 Students with disabilities are to submit relevant documents to the Language Education Center for exemptionfrom The Regulations. Their terms and conditions for graduation are not restricted to The Regulations.

Article 10 The Regulations, after adopted by the Academic Affairs and approved by the university president, apply from the date of promulgation.
