“Children in our classrooms love books and spend time with them everyday. As teachers we are happier and more creative, then before, but if we don’t want to return to programmed reading instruction, we’re going to have to know what to teach instead”...and what resources we can use to support quality teaching. (Mosaic of Thought by Ellin Keene p.17 2007)
The Happy Hollow Mosaic of Thought study group met for a semester long series of bi-monthly meetings to delve deeply into Ellin Keene’s revised book. While much of her work validated what we are currently doing in our classrooms, it also reinforced the need to continuously reflect and revamp our current practices. Our work further inspired us to examine our literary resources and our literacy standards. Ellin Keene’s upcoming visit will challenge us to continue revitalizing our pedagogy.
Through our conversations and our online reflections we realized the need for more comprehensive and curriculum related texts to support the teaching of reading strategies. Grade level lists were compiled to be used as an added resource at the primary and intermediate grades.
The books were chosen from collections of books currently in classrooms and consists of favorite reads and curriculum related texts.
