OXFORDSHIRE BEAT CHESHIRE'S CHALLENGE ln an exciting finish to a rain affected 3 day Minor Counties Championship match at Cheadle Hulme, Oxfordshire beat a young J W Lees Cheshire side in the final over, having been set a generous target of 187 in 45 overs by Cheshire's new captain, Andrew Hall In set1ing this challenge Hall was prepared to risk defeat in the attempt to win the match, -thus, maybe, setting a marker for his style of captaincy.
Cheshire won the toss and elected to bat on what turned out to be a tricky seamers wicket, which Oxfordshire's experienced captain, Keith Arnold, used to great effect Cheshire were reduced to 77 for 6 before Cheshire's professional Simon Renshaw rescued the innings in a partnership with wicket-keeper, Mark Makin of Hyde CC, who made an invaluable 37 in his first innings for the County. Renshaw was last out, two short of a deserved century, when he drilled a half volley straight at mid-off, leaving Cheshire's score at 229 -far higher than looked likely earlier.
On the second day, only four overs were possible due to rain, so it was left to the Captains on the third day to make declarations to give both sides a chance to win. Cheshire's side included six players under 20 and they fielded keenly in the attempt to frustrate Oxfordshire's bid to win. They very nearly contained them, but on the final afternoon the wicket had flattened out into a good batting track and taking wickets becaI11e difficult Oxfordshire's batsmen held their nerve under pressure and scored the winning runs in the final over with five wickets still in hand.
Not the result Cheshire would have wanted, but it was a good final days cricket for the crowd.

Oxfordshire 98-3d and 187-5
