Chemistry Element Trading Cards – Accelerated Science

Adapted from: Cary Academy - W.G.Rushin

For this project, you will design a trading card for an element of your choice. The card needs to have overall dimensions of 4 X 6 inches (index card). The front of the card should be colorful and include the element’s symbol and number ONLY. Do not include the name, atomic mass or other information! The front of the card should include an “original” design related to the element that reflects the creativity of their creator. All designs should be original creations, do not print pictures from the Internet. Additionally, the card should be laminated or covered in some manner to make it durable.

The back of the card should include the following information:

·  your name in the upper right hand corner

·  element name and symbol

·  name of discoverer or people group that first used it

·  date of discovery or when first used (specific=1946)(general=”Known since ancient times”)

·  place of discovery or first used (specific=”London, England)(general=”Ancient Greece”)

·  the atomic number and the atomic mass

·  List the known isotopes and their percent abundance

·  indicate if the element is a metal, non-metal, or metalloid

·  Include an ACCURATE Bohr model of the element

·  physical properties of density (g/cm3), melting point (° Celsius), and boiling point (° Celsius)

The back of the card should also include a short narrative (3-5 sentences) that contains other interesting information about your element. This could include uses for the element, the importance of the element, or just other interesting facts about the element. DO NOT REPEAT INFORMATION FROM THE BULLETED LIST!!

Each student has to make (3) THREE identical trading cards. You will then trade two of your cards with other students and evaluate the cards.

Questions to consider about your cards:

INFORMATION: PRESENTATION:

1. Is the card informative? 1. Is the card well organized?

Can someone learn about the Is the information easy to find and

element from the card? read?

2. Amount of information? 2. Creative/Artistic appeal?

Presence of required information Use of color and graphics

3. Is the information correct? 3. Spelling and grammar

4. Is the card design durable?

The element trading cards will be due ______.

You are required to use at least two sources. List the following information at the bottom of your notes for each source:

Book: Title, author and copyright

Internet: Web address, date accessed and institution that publishes the web site
