Curriculum Outcomes

Chemistry is the science that deals with the structure and properties of matter. It explores the composition of and interactions between substances. The Atlantic Canada science curriculum is designed to enable students to acquire science-related knowledge, skills, and attitudes and to engage them in the study and analysis of the interrelationships among science, technology, society and the environment (STSE). It also reflects the three major processes of science learning: inquiry, problem solving, and decision making.

A complete curriculum guide is available at the following website:

Evaluation: Semester mark accounts for 80% of the final mark and is comprised of labs, assignments, quizzes, tests, etc. Exam accounts for 20% of the final mark.

Required materials: The Chemistry 12 course cannot be completed without you having a SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR and the course TEXTBOOK at EVERY CLASS.

A pencil, eraser, pen, loose leaf and binder are also needed.

**Cell phones may not be used as calculators.

Behaviour Expectations:

1. Students are expected to behave in a manner that is in accordance with a safe and respectful learning environment, as outlined in the school discipline policy.

2. Homework is an essential part of this course, and students are expected to do all practice questions assigned. In-class assignments and probes will be given regularly and are based on practice questions.

3. If you are absent for a test, you are required to bring a written excuse from a doctor within two days of your return to class. Failure to do so will result in a mark of zero (0) for the test or assignment.

4. If you are absent for a test, quiz, or probe, you will write it the day you return to class. This is also true for those who miss assessments while taking a holiday during the school term.

5. If you are absent the day an assignment is due, it is due upon your return.

6. It is your responsibility to get any work you miss. (class notes, assignments, due dates, and homework). Once you have done so, see your teacher for extra-help.

7. DO NOT LET YOURSELF GET BEHIND.

8. Students will not be given extra work to increase their mark. Also, students cannot re-write tests/quizzes if they do poorly and want to better their mark.

Late Assignment Practice

Students are responsible for completing assignments by specific due dates. Extended deadlines may be arranged for extenuating circumstances as decided by Mr.Gillie, otherwisem, a zero will be given for the assessment.

***If you are unable to meet a deadline, it is your responsibility to communicate this with your teacher PRIOR TO THE DUE DATE so that interventions can be employed. Otherwise, you will receive a zero for the assignment.

Having difficulty?

For students experiencing difficulty with a course, here are some strategies:

Seek extra-help from peers

Regularly review your work

Get a tutor
