Chemical Compounds Project

Objective: Students will become better acquainted with the writing and naming of chemical compounds and the use of chemicals in everyday life in foods and products that are used in the home.

Instructions:

  1. Neatly cut out a minimum of 20 original labels from foods and products you use everyday including the ingredients and the name/brand of the product. Mount each label neatly on a clean sheet of white paper and number them from 1 to 20 (or more). 2 points will be deducted for each missing label!
  1. You may use any food produce or any items with chemical compounds listed.
  1. From these 20 labels (or more) you must find at least 35 different chemical compounds on them that you recognize. You will write the chemical formulas and the chemical names. You must underline the name of each compound on the label.

You may use medicines (this includes vitamins)

  1. calcium carbonate -- CaCO3
  1. ascorbic acid -- C6H8O6
  1. zinc oxide – ZnO
  1. folic acid -- C19H19N7O6

You may use pet products

  1. phosphoric acid -- H3PO4
  1. potassium chloride -- KCl
  1. ferrous sulfate – FeS
  1. copper sulfate – CuSO4
  1. manganese sulfate – MnSO4
  1. sodium bisulfite – NaHSO3

You may use toiletries

Examples:

Toothpaste

Lotion

Mouthwash

Soap

Shampoo

Makeup

Shaving cream

You may use cleaning products

You may use candies

  1. citric acid -- C6H8O7

You may use Slim Fast or diet food labels

You may NOT use single elements. They must be compounds.

No LATE projects will be accepted. If you are deathly ill, you must get someone to bring your project to school.

The project will count as A MAJOR TEST GRADE!

You will be graded on accuracy (2 points for each compound = 70 points) and neatness (10 points).

Include a table of contents that gives the name/brand of each product label and a list of all chemical names and formulas you used for that label (15 points). The numbering system for the labels and compounds must correspond to the numbering system used within the project.

Include a decorated cover page with a title, your name, date, and period. (5 points)

Hole punch all papers and place in a brad or small ring binder.

Your project should be assembled BEFORE you get to class.

It will be counted late if it is not ready when I call for it.

Checklist for completion:

_____ Any duplication of compounds will result in a 5-point deduction per duplication.
