Physical and Chemical Change Poster ProjectName ______
Many changes are taking place all around you. Most you would never even recognize were occurring if you didn’t study chemistry. Changes that result in new products are called Chemical Changes and the results of a chemical reaction play an important role in our lives.
For this project, you will observe the chemical and physical changes that surround you in your daily life. You will record these changes in a data table, justify why you think that they are chemical or physical changes, and if a chemical change classify the reactions that produced them as synthesis, decomposition, or replacement reactions. You will also note whether the chemical or physicalchange is occurring in a living or nonliving setting.
DO NOT DO ANY CHEMICAL REACTIONS YOURSELF, YOU ARE ONLY SUPPOSED TO OBSERVE CHANGES THAT OCCUR COMMONLY AROUND YOU!
Project Procedures:
- You will create a data table for your observations. The table must include the following:
- Date you noticed the chemical or physical change.
- Description of the chemical/physical change.
- Justification – Why do you think it is a chemical/physical change? Use the 5 signs of a Chemical Change – Change in color, change in properties, change in temperature, formation of a gas, or the formation of a precipitate.
- Did it occur in a Living or Nonliving setting. For example Plants and animals are living things is the change due to the living thing or dopes it just happen without living things taking part
- Reaction Classification (Synthesis, Decomposition, Replacement)ONLY IF A CHEMICAL CHANGE
- Prepare a poster as a visual of your chemical/physical changes. It must contain your table of chemical/physical changes.
- Your visual must also include one of your chemical changes shown as the real balanced chemical equation for that reaction.
- You must include a photo or picture illustrating your Chemical Change for each of the 15chemical/physical changes on your poster.
Important Project Rules:
- No repeating the same chemical/physicalChange/Reaction. You can have each change only once.
- You must have a total of 15Chemical/Physical Changes on your poster. With a minimum of 5 chemical and 5 physical, the remaining 5 can be either or. Remember no repeats.
- You can only have 1 chemical change from a lab in class.
- Project is due Friday, October 9th.
- Counts as a project grade.
- I will check your chemical reactions list if you bring them in by Tuesday, Oct.6th!
Grading:
Section / Total Points Available / Requirements / Points SubtractedData Log Poster / 60 / Must have a minimum of 15 Chemical/Physcal changes Changes correctly filled out on your Chemical Data table
Remember a minimum of 5 chemical and 5 physical / -5 pts. for each less than the 15 required.
-1 pt. for each mistake on your data log.
-10 pts. for any section of data log missing entirely
-1 for any grammar and neatness error (if I can’t read it, you will lose points)
Balanced Equation / 20 / Must Have one Balanced Chemical Equation for one of your chemical changes / -2 pts. for each error in the equation (including the elements, coefficients, and subscripts)
Illustrations / 20 / Must have pictures of your chemical/physical changes / -3 for no picture
-3 for inaccurate picture
