CHEM 489 Advanced Environmental Chemistry – Spring 2018

Worksheet #3: Evaluation of Reaction Efficiency (15 points)

Due: Thursday, February 15 at 9:30 AM (not accepted late)

You are expected to answer the following questions based on the lecture material, the posted PDF articles, and/or information you might find on-line. Any information found on-line MUST be referenced! Most questions can be answered directly on this sheet, but you may use a separate sheet of paper if you wish. You can work together, but must submit your own worksheet and your own answers.

1. This worksheet asks you to think critically about the design and outcome of a chemical reaction or process.

(a) List five factors that should be considered in the design of a “green” chemical synthesis or process.

(b) List the metrics you would employ in evaluating the efficiency of a chemical reaction or process.

2. Phloroglucinol is an important bulk chemical and feedstock for the production of pharmaceuticals. Up to the mid-1980s phloroglucinol was synthesized from trinitrotoluene (TNT). An overview of this process is shown below:

A more detailed synthetic scheme with proper stoichiometry, molecular weights and mass quantities is below:

(a) Look up information on the (i) annual world-wide production of phloroglucinol (Kg), and (ii) some of its most common commercial uses.

(b) Can you identify and particular hazardous reactants and products?

(c) Calculate the % yield for this process (note that mass quantities are in units of Kilograms). Show all work.

(d) Calculate the % atom economy for this process. Show all work.

(e) Calculate the PMI and/or E-factor for this process. Also evaluate how many Kg of waste are produced per Kg of desired product. Show all work.

(f) Based on all information above, write an assessment about the efficiency of this process. You are expected to include in your evaluation all metrics discussed in class and reviewed during our most recent discussion about biodiesel. Please note that you will be asked to address a similar question on your exam. Please write your assessment on a separate sheet of paper and attach to this worksheet.
