General Advice Worker

Job Description

Overview

The post holder will deliver general advice and casework in social welfare law, including welfare benefits, debt, housing, and immigration, to Manchester residents.

Hours of work:35 per week

Salary:NJC payscale 6, scp 26-28, £23,398-£24,964

Holidays:30 days per year + Bank Holidays

Appointment:The post is funded untilend of February 2020 by theBig Lottery Reaching Communities Programme

  1. Advice Delivery

1.1Deliver accurate and reliable advice in key areas of social welfare law at the Centre and outreach locations as well as by phone/email, in an accessible and appropriate way to meet the needs of our target client groups, the majority of whom come from BAME/migrant communities.

1.2Manage and progress a caseload and keep accurate case, statistical and monitoring records, working to advice quality standards.

1.3Refer cases requiring specialist advice and representation to CHAC’s Specialist Welfare Benefits Adviser or other provision as appropriate.

1.4Identify clients’ other support needs e.g.around language, IT, jobseeking, hardship/destitution, and refer them to appropriate services.

1.5Keep up to date with relevant policy and legislation regarding social welfare law categories, especially regarding welfare reform and benefits for migrants.

1.6Contribute to the delivery, monitoring and reporting for the Reaching Communities advice projectas required.

3.1In conjunction with the Centre Manager and other staff, assist with the day-to-dayrunning of the Advice Centre, including covering for absent colleagues’ work.

3.2Communicate courteously and effectively with other paid and voluntary team members, asking for and offering support as necessary.

3.3Actively participate in and contribute to team meetings and regular business planning meetings.

4.Other

4.1Contribute to the establishment and delivery of outreach advice sessions with partner organisations as required.

4.2Support the recruitment, training and supervision of volunteers as required.

4.3Assist with the triage of advice sessions as required.

4.4Assist with preparing reports for the Management Committee and occasional attendance of Management Committee and other external meetings, including some evening meetings.

4.5Actively participate in supervision and appraisal; take responsibility for own professional development and participate in learning activities as agreed with the Centre Manager.

4.6Undertake occasional other duties, as required by the Centre Manager.
