Infection Control Annual Report

1. INTRODUCTION
The practice is required to prepare "An annual statement, for anyone who wishes to see it, including patients and regulatory authorities, should be prepared by the IPC Lead for each registered provider, which should provide a short review of any:
• known infection transmission event and actions arising from this;
• audits undertaken and subsequent actions;
• risk assessments undertaken for prevention and control of infection;
• training received by staff; and
• review and update of policies, procedures and guidance." The Health and Social Care Act 2008 Code of Practice on the prevention and control of infections and related guidance. Department of Health (2010)

Audits Undertaken
Audit of Infection Control Related Significant Events
15 Significant events recorded in total during period – 2 potentially IC related
· First same vaccination needle inserted twice into child during childhood vaccination clinic. Relevant advice sought from Communicable Diseases Dept. No further action reqd. Learning implemented
· Second needlestick injury obtained on return to practice following HV. No sharps bin taken. Needle stick protocol followed. Learning implemented
Minor Surgery (not at Bridge House)
No infections recorded after minor surgery
Staff Infection Control Training
4 Nursing clinical staff from practice attended Local Infection Control Training event in May 2014. 1 had attended in November 2013. Remaining 3 clinical staff to attend in September 2014
Learning to be disseminated to non-clinical staff during October staff training event.
Infection Control awareness training was provided in CQC training updates provided to staff in December 2012 and October 2013.
Infection Control agenda item for May Nurse Meeting. Previous infection control report considered in the light of reopening Bride House after refurbishment.
Review of Practice Policies
Bridge House Medical Centre has recently undergone a significant refurbishment providing the ideal opportunity to review Fire Safety, Health & Safety, General Security and Infection Control Processes throughout the building. The resulting changes have led to a review of the Practice’s Business Continuity Plan and Infection Control Policies
The building reopened for patients in June 2014 and the revised policies and additional equipment provided will be adapted with the benefit of practical use of the building.
