CETA Scholarship Fund Application

Guidelines

To be eligible the applicant must:

  • Be a senior in the year the award is presented
  • Plan to declare a major or minor in Theatre at a college, university or art institute, with the goal of becoming a theatre educator
  • Be a dedicated theatre student
  • Have at least a 2.0 GPA

Application Procedure:

Applicants can obtain an application from their theatre teacher or school counselor at the end of their junior year.

Applicants will provide:

  • a completed application form
  • a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s high school theatre teacher
  • an essay of between 800-1000 words about the applicant’s view on the role of theatre, educational theatre, the value of arts in education, and their goals.

Applications must be received no later than December 5th (which precedes the NorCal and Southern High School Theatre Festival dates).

Award Procedure:

  • Award committee will consist of three members who are either a high school theatre teacher or college/university theatre teacher.
  • Recipient will be selected and notified by March 1st.
  • Recipient must send proof of registration and declared major or minor in Theatre, in the student’s name by October 15th of their freshman year in college.
  • Funds will then be sent to the recipient by the CETA Treasurer.
  • The scholarship is paid through yearly contributions/donations from interested parties.

The Charlotte Motter CETA Theatre Education Scholarship

This scholarship is named in honor of Charlotte Kay Motter. the quintessential theatre educator from 1944-1993, teaching junior high through college/university levels She has had an extensive career as a consultant, task force leader, judge coordinator, author, actress, business & publicity manager, and director. There is no one in the history of California who has taken the leadership in theatre education that Charlotte has. She served on the board of the Regional Kennedy Center/American College Theater Festival; has been president of DTASC, CETA South; chair of the Legislative Action Coalition for Arts Education; founded and served as first president of the California Educational Theatre Association; and in recognition of her contributions to the field of theatre, was elected as a Fellow in the American Theatre Association.
Among her many awards and honors are the Gold Medallion of the American College Theatre Festival, The Founders Award of the Secondary School Theatre Association, the CETA Outstanding Theatre Educator Award, and the CETA Lifetime Achievement Award.
