Charity Abseil – Mission Accomplished!!!

On Sunday 5th July 2015 we finally accomplished our 262 feet abseil of the ArcelorMittal Orbit in London’s Olympic Park.

Thanks to your generosity and after gift-aid has been added, our patients, colleagues, suppliers, family and friendshave helped us raise approximately £3278.75 for Cancer Research UK.

It had been cancelled twice previously due to high winds, which was very disappointing but our safety was paramount. However, on the day it was well worth the wait and the sun shone for us.

It was an amazing experience and although very scary getting over the parapet, once we had settled into our harnesses, we were ready to make our descent. We took our time as we had video cameras on our helmets to record the whole event, all whilst wearing our SAS (Special Abseil Services) fancy dress outfit and camouflage make-up.

Liz Wells, Practice Manager:

My wonderful sister Dawn lost her life to an aggressive form of cancer (Metastatic Carcinoma of Lung with Lymphangitis) just over 6 years ago, one week before her 50th birthday, having been diagnosed on her 49th birthday. The care and support Dawn and all our family received from LOROS were invaluable.

Losing Dawn affected our family greatly; she was a beautiful and kind hearted woman. Our dad was heart-broken at losing one of his 7 children; sadly he passed away 8 days later. Both our dad and our dear mum, who passed away one week after a haemorrhagic stroke on 25.8.06, had experienced cancer, so this cause is very important to me.

I recently helped my husband Rog raise funds for CRUK; he held a fancy dress birthday party and asked for donations in lieu of gifts and he also held a raffle. Thanks to the generosity of everyone who came to the party, we raised £800.

This inspired me to raise more funds for CRUK and to apply to take part in the 262 feet (80 metres) free fall abseil of the ArcelorMittal Orbit (red tower) which stands at 375 feet in height, in the Olympic Park in London.

5 years ago I did my first Race for life, it was a very moving experience for me to be a part of a sea of ladies and young children, having fun whilst raising funds for such a good cause

4 years ago I did the Race for life again for my lovely brother-in- law who had been diagnosed with Prostate cancer, but having had a radical operation he has beaten this devastating disease and seen a new addition to the family by way of a beautiful little boy called George now just over 2yrs old.

Jan 24th 2015 I had much fun at another fund raising event,a fancy dress party for my friends husbands 70th birthday where £800.00 was raised.

Having worked for GPs for 27 years, I have come to know many lovely people who have ‘beaten the battle’, but sadly also know of many who certainly put up a good fight but lost the Battle. They all have a special place in my heart, their courage inspires me to help continue the very much needed research into beating this battle for good.
