CENTRE FOR CAREER COUNSELING AND JOB PLACEMENT (CCJP)

As part of the Women Institute for Leadership and Learning, the mission of the Centre of Career Counseling and Job Placement is to encourage and assist women in their efforts to succeed in the workplace. The Centre offers comprehensive vocational assessment, training, job placement assistance and retention services to insure successful transition from University to workplace. The Centre is providing counseling to students to select suitable careers and is assisting students in job placements and skill development. Furthermore, the Centre is Preparing Students for Career Success and Their Role as Future Leaders by:

  • Helping students start their career planning and preparation at an early stage through career and student development programs
  • Soliciting more internship opportunities and further expand the employment network for graduates
  • Effectively improving students in behavior and skills necessary to seek and qualify for job.
  • Inviting government officers, judges, women entrepreneurs and members of Federal, Provincial and Public Services for interaction with students
  • Conducting workshop and seminars to encourage students toward public and private employment

The Centre for Career Counseling and Job Placement is offering the following services to students:

  • Career counseling services which includes, identifying Career Interests, effective search methods, access to job listings, linkages with local job- agencies
  • Skills training services including, resume writing, making cover letters, interviewing techniques, effective communication, coping with job and personal life
  • Job Placement Services including, presentations for career opportunities, rotating resumes to agencies, access to industrial linkages, accepting a job and retaining a career.

STUDENT REGISTRATION – NEED ASSESSMENT

Student registration was carried out, and on its basis a Need Assessment Analysis was done. Based on the data gathered and the areas highlighted, various training sessions have been conducted so as to help students develop employability skills including workshops on resume writing, making cover letter and personal grooming. Further, various seminars and lectures are also conducted every week so as to help students identify their areas of interests and explore job avenues. Students also get a chance to interact with various officials from organizations such as British Council and The United States Education Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) to explore opportunities of higher education and research collaboration.

ON CAMPUS RECRUITMENT BY COMPANIES

In addition, for the purpose of job placement, various companies have contacted the office for the recruitment of LCWU graduates as well as conducted on-campus recruitment tests. Four companies, in particular, Nippon Paints, Sapphire Textiles, Coca Cola and Techno-soft solutions visited the campus and set up stalls for the purpose of formally interviewing students, collecting resumes and conducting on-campus recruitment tests. Additionally, several students are put in contact with companies/organizations such as Bata Pakistan, Karma Fashion Designer, Lotus PR, Teach for Pakistan, Women Empowerment Group and Research Institute of Natural Resources of Pakistan.

IMPACT FACTOR ANALYSES

The office started in October 2011, since then, 1440/6257 students (enrolled in BS/MS) benefited from the services provided (for the year of 2011- 2012). Furthermore, impact factor analysis was also carried in order to show how many students have approached the office and benefited from the services provided. The analysis indicated that 23% of the student body approached the office and benefited from our various services provided.

MILESTONES ACHIEVED

On Campus Internship Program:

CCJP has launched its on-campus internship program in November 2012 for LCWU graduates and students. The main purpose behind this program is to facilitate students/graduates to:

  • Gain valuable work experience
  • Have an edge in the job market
  • Decide if this is a right career for them
  • Develop networking opportunities
  • Apply classroom knowledge
  • Gain confidence

The duration of internship is 3 months. Interns are being paid a stipend of Rs. 100/hour. Interns are required to work 3 hours a day and 15 hours a week. The table below indicates the current status of On-campus Internship Program:

Top Employers’ Meeting

CCJP organized Top Employers’ Meeting in the preparation of First LCWU Job Fair 2013 held February 12, 2013. In the Top Employers’ Meeting, CEOs, Directors, as well as HR officials of various leading top employers including, PEL, Nestle, Geo News, Nishat Textiles, Panasian Group, Cinnova HR, Stylo Shoes, Venexel, Infotech, Energetix, i2c inc, First Women Bank, Habib Bank Limited, National Bank of Pakistan, City 42 and many more have participated.The meeting focused on enhancing industrial linkages, identifying gaps inhibiting employability of women graduates as well as promotion of economic empowerment.

First LCWU Job Fair

Recently, the Centre for Career Counseling and Job Placement organized its first LCWU Job Fair, held on 27th February 2013.The Job Fair was organized for the purpose of enhancing industrial linkages, identifying gaps inhibiting employability of women graduates as well as promotion of economic empowerment. This Job Fair was proved to be a great opportunity for Lahore College for Women University to market and promote its disciplines, achievements of the students and further to enhance corporate relations. About 30 corporate sector companies participated in the Job Fair and ensured future collaboration with Lahore College for Women University.

WHAT WE HAVE DONE SO FAR

A quick overview on the activities carried out by CCJP from September 2012 to June 2013 is as follows:

September 2012

  • September 4 – 14: A stall was set up by the office of Career counseling and Job Placement for prospective students at admission venue. The purpose was to familiarize the students with Centre’s services and to help them in choosing right subject combination for them.
  • September 12 – 13: Visit to “Australian Education Expo” regarding exploring various opportunities for pursuing further studies abroad.
  • September 25: Meeting with the officials associated with “Punjab Youth Internship Program” for inducting LCWU students for Punjab Youth Internship Program
  • September 25 – 28: Meeting with the graduating class i.e. BS IV (semester 7) and MS II (semester 3) of all departments (having visited each department and respective HODs) and have them registered and have collected all relevant details from them for our Graduate Output Baseline Data.

October 2012

  • October 1 – 5: Meeting with the graduating class i.e. BS IV (semester 7) and MS II (semester 3) of all departments for the purpose of collecting all relevant details from them from our Graduate Output Baseline Data.
  • October 2: Seminar on “GRE Test Preparation” by United States Education Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP).
  • October 3: Meeting with “Teach for Pakistan” officials for inducting LCWU students.
  • October 4: Seminar on “Internship opportunities provided under Punjab Youth Internship Program”.
  • October 8 - 18: Training on “Entrepreneurship” organized and conducted by International Labor Organization (ILO). Ms. Mehr Agha – Head, CCJP participated in the ten day training.
  • October 21: Visit to Rozee.pk “Punjab Job Fair 2012”.
  • October 24: "Future On" - a workshop on overcoming fear of public speaking and career development.

November 2012

  • November 5 – 12: Mid-term examinations
  • November 15: Meeting with GCU officials regarding the implementation of KAB (Know about Business) program in the curriculum.
  • November 19: Briefing Session by British Council on Virtual Education Exhibition 2012
  • November 19 – 30: 10-day training for students on Housekeeping by College for Tourism and Hotel Management (COTHM) through First Women Bank’s Gender Equity Program
  • November 22: Seminar on Islamic Banking and Internship Opportunities by Bank Alfalah
  • November 29: On-campus recruitment test by Coca Cola

December 2012

  • December 13: Visit by HEC and Queen Mary officials for the purpose of establishing career counseling centre at Queen Marry College in collaboration with the team of LCWU Centre for Career Counseling and Job Placement.
  • December 18: Seminar on the job opportunities provided by “Teach for Pakistan”
  • December 25 – 31: Winter Holidays

January 2013

  • January 7: Meeting with Mr. Tariq Hussain regarding LCWU Vision 2020
  • January 8: Visit to Queen Mary College for the inauguration of their Career Counseling Centre
  • January 14: Visit to Institute for Career and Personal Development (ICPD) to liaise with career counselors of other universities i.e. Beaconhouse National University, Lahore School of Economics and Qarshi University etc. Ms. Rida Sohail, Assistant Manager – CCJP visited the institute.
  • January 15: Meeting with Mr. Monis Rehman, CEO Rozee.pk . Team CCJP met with the CEO and discussed about organizing the First LCWU Job Fair 2013.

  • March 28: Meeting with the HR officials from Beaconhouse School System for conducting on- campus recruitment drive at LCWU.
  • March 29: Meeting with the officials of Institute for Career Development for the purpose of conducting workshop on skill development at LCWU

April 2013

  • April 17: Visit by Sheffield Officials to discuss prospects of pursuing further studies in the University of Sheffield, UK
  • April 18: Orientation session by WWF on their Eco Internship Program
  • April 25: Informative session on the Importance of Entrepreneurship by Ms. Sadaf Abid
  • April 30: Workshop on Understanding the Dynamics of a Successful Person by Muneeb Ahmed, Assistant Manager HR at Superior University.

May 2013

  • May 16: Workshop on the development of skills necessary to excel in a job market by Institute of Career Development (ICD)
  • May 17: Meeting with Zamara Amjad – Manager Marketing and Student Recruitment at ACCA for the purpose of discussing ACCA’a Student Ambassador Program
  • May 29: Seminar on the various job opportunities in Pakistan Army

June 2013

  • June 20: Manager Today CEO Summit Asia 2013. Attended by Ms. Mehr A. Tahir - Head CCJP to liaise with high ranked corporate officials
  • June 28: Meeting with Mr. Omar Ghazali a corporate training for the purpose of conducting skill development training for faculty and students in the near future and meeting Dr. Ahsan Mehmood, Editor Abb-Takk News.

Counseling and Career Guidance

The Counselling Centre provides career guidance as well as psychological counselling along with personal growth and development services. The centre also develops and disseminates career guidance materials to introduce available options for making occupational choices. The centre is also offering psychological assessment services including aptitude, intelligence and personality assessment.

Seminars/workshops are also arranged on following areas:

  • Anger management
  • Stress management
  • Assertiveness training
  • Decision making
  • Problem solving skills etc

Health Education Services

Student Service Centre (SSC) regularly organizes health education activities in collaboration with Shaukat Khanam Cancer Hospital and Pink Ribbon Pakistan. Two free breast screening camps have been held with the help of Pink ribbon Pakistan. Around 100 women, mostly LCWU faculty, benefited from these campuses and had free of cost mammography.
