1. What is the Gilded Age? It is the period of time that was glittering of the surface, but corrupt underneath. OR The Gilded Age highlights the time of inequality of the wealthy business owners versus the hard-working laborer.

2. What are political machines? A political machine is a powerful organization that used both legal and illegal methods to get their candidates elected to public office.

3. What were the muckrakers? The muckrakers were journalists who exposed the muck and filth of society.

4. What were the Progressives? The Progressives were a group of reformers who wanted to improve society in the late 1800s.

5. What was the 17th Amendment about? The 17th Amendment allowed the Americans to vote directly for their U.S. Senators.

6. What is a recall? A recall is when the official is removed before the end of his term or office.

7. What is an initiative? The initiative procedure allows voters to propose a new law by collecting signatures on a petition.

8. What is a referendum? The referendum procedure permits voters to approve of a new law by collecting signatures on a petition.

19. What did the NAACP do? The NAACP attacked discrimination by using the courts. These laws stopped many of the past discriminatory laws and practices.
