From the Superintendent:

Happy Holidays!

On behalf of the Board of Education, staff and students, we wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

Superintendent Search Update:

The Board of Education’s quest to appoint a new superintendent for District 88 is on schedule. Six first-round interviews were conducted with candidates on October 15th. Three candidates were brought back for second-round interviews during recent weeks. The next step in the process is to arrange for an on-site visitation where representatives from the Chaney-Monge Board have the opportunity to meet with stakeholders from the school district’s new leader selected by the end of January, 2012. The new superintendent will assume duties July 1, 2012.

Reduced Price Internet:

Internet Essentials is a program offered by Comcast to households with children who receive free school lunches under the National School Lunch Program. The program will provide broadband internet, on-line training and tools, and a computer if needed at low-cost. Call 1-855-846-8376 or visit InternetEssential.com for more information. This is not a school sponsored or board of education endorsed program. However, it is a unique opportunity to bring high tech and internet to the homes of students.

Is School Closed?

Its freezing cold, the snow’s blowing, wind’s howling and my homework isn’t done: what a great time to find out that there is no school! If possible, the decision to close school is made the night before or very early in the morning (before 7:00 AM) of the day classes will be canceled.

By Phone: Principal Jackie Hall will send a recorded phone message directly to the phone numbers listed in your child’s registration forms. Messages are sent immediately after the decision is made to close school for the day. Please do not call the school to verify that school has been closed. Make sure you answering machines or message systems are in working order.

TV and RADIO: Locally, WJOL 1340 AM and WCCQ 98.3 FM will broadcast school closing information continuously. Major Chicago TV stations 2, 5, 7, 9 and 32 will have a continuous crawling message line at the bottom of the TV screen with school closing information.

On-Line: Major Chicago newspaper, radio and TV stations have links for school closing information. Locally, check out the websites for WJOL and the Joliet Herald News. Also, our school closing information may be found at www.emergencyclosings.com at any time.

From the Principal – Jackie Hall

Parent Teacher Conferences

Thank you to all parents who attended your child’s Parent-Teacher Conference and Bring an Adult to School Day. Our school was buzzing with grown-ups. Research shows that parent involvement and communication has been strongly linked with enhanced academic achievement and student motivation.

We would also like to congratulate some very special students from our program. Last month’s musician-of-the-month was flautist Kortney Sikic. Special thanks to all who supported our last fundraiser. We are looking forward to our next fundraiser, an evening of shopping and entertainment on Friday, December 9th at Barnes & Noble Bookstore located at 2621 Plainfield Road, Joliet, IL. A portion of all sales that evening will go toward our music program – you just have to mention Chaney Monge at the register. So come out and support your students from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. The choir will be performing at 7 pm and we will have free gift-wrapping and story-reading throughout the night as well. Bring the whole family, you will surely enjoy yourselves.

A Message from Nurse Sherry

To all parents of students who wear glasses:

Please make sure your children have their glasses with them each day to ensure their optimal learning potential. I have seen an increase of students who wear glasses complaining of headaches because they are not wearing the prescribed eyewear.

To all parents of Chaney Monge Students:

It is that time of year again when students will need to have coats & shoes & all appropriate outerwear. It is especially important for those who walk to school. Please take a little extra time prior to school to make sure your student is dressed accordingly. We are also seeing an increase of students who are not eating something prior to the school day. We do not have a breakfast meal at the school. It is important for every child’s learning potential to have a good breakfast.

A Message from Mrs. McMillin
