JOINT INSTRUCTOR TRAINING, started in 2013

The joint Challenge Course and Climbing Instructor Training programs of the Greater St. Louis Area and the Lewis & Clark Councils were approved by the BSA in June 2013. The Challenge Course/Climbing Committees of both councils saw the opportunity of having training courses that would enable Instructors to be able to lead at any of the 3 Challenge Courses that our councils operate. When a Scouter takes their Initial Challenge Course Instructor training at either S-F or Camp Joy they then would be able to take a 1 day orientation course for the other courses.

A Wednesday night meeting and a weekend training course are required to be eligible to become a qualified leader for our Challenge Courses. GSLAC has a course at S bar F Scout Ranch and Beaumont Scout Reservation, L&Chas a course at Camp Joy; different from each other but all offer the challenges that Scouts and Venturers enjoy. All programs and sites use the same policies and procedures.

WEEKEND INITIAL INSTRUCTOR TRAINING COURSES, 2 at S bar F, 1 at CAMP JOYare offered; all teach the basic skills needed to become a Challenge Course Instructor in both councils. Course content is identical; you receive instruction about how to lead a safe and fun experience withsessions on equipment, game leadership and course management and the specifics of the S bar F or Camp Joy Challenge Courses.

1 DAY ORIENTATION TRAINING COURSES

After taking any of the Initial Weekend Instructor Training Courses, Scouters may take the 1 Day Orientation courses for the other 2 Challenge Courses. Currently we have only scheduled an Orientation Course for the Beaumont Scout Reservation Challenge Course in the fall of 2016 and spring 2017. Watch council websites as we plan to add 1 day courses for Camp Joy and S bar F.

This one-day orientation is held at Beaumont. Take the Beaumont 1 day orientation to become eligibleto be qualified for both Beaumont and S bar F courses. While both S bar F and Beaumont have the same procedures and equipment they have different events and layout.
