About the Overviews
Each week I will provide you with a short narrative about the week's topic. Sometimes it will be a review of the textbook chapter. Sometimes it will contain information that is not included in the textbook. While they are not associated specifically with points (except for the occasional extra credit I throw in them), please take a few minutes to read these overviews to make sure you are catching the important points I want you to get from the lesson.
Windows XP/Vista
Our course, BTEC149, covers: Windows, MS Word 2007, MS Excel 2007, and MS PowerPoint 2007. These applications are all part of a bundle that Microsoft calls Office. Application software like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are used to produce work documents. Windows, however, is a different story. Windows is not an application. Windows, instead, is an operating system. The XP and Vista notations in the Windows name indicate the version of Windows. Windows XP was released near the end of August 2001. Windows Vista was released at the beginning of November 2006. Hmmm...I wonder what the next version of Windows will be?
If your computer was a car, Windows would be the tires on the car, and the MS Office applications would be the passengers. If your car has a single flat tire, it is no longer drivable. That is how important Windows is to your computer. It tells your computer how to function, and if it is balanced, everything runs the way it is supposed to. And, just like a car, you don't have to be a mechanic or engineer to know how to run it, but you do need to know some basic maintenance and organization techniques and strategies to keep it running.
So, these two A and B units on Windows introduce you to our operating system. And, along the way, you'll learn about working with windows, creating folders, organizing files, starting applications, and other aspects of working in the Windows environment.
You need to know which version of Windows you have on your computer and perform the steps in your textbook that relate to that version. The textbook covers Windows XP and Vista. If you have Windows 7 on your computer, you need a handout to complete sections A and B.

Word Unit B Textbook Work
Word Unit B due July 21
Overview: Word 2007 Overview
Overview
The first unit for Word (A) contains basic processing, font formatting (size, color, font type), and viewing different parts of a document screen and the menus.
Since the majority of the chapter is so basic, pay close attention to thedetails in the shaded boxes and tables and callouts in the textbook. Learn to regularly use the Show/Hide paragraph (non-printing symbols). You will be amazed at how powerful features like these are when you know how to use them quickly and effectively.
There are many shortcuts and efficiencies in all software applications. They are limited only by your lack of knowledge and use of them. Take this opportunity to learn the fastest way to select (highlight) text, since you'll need to select text so many times while you are word processing. Hint: it won't be by dragging your mouse. There are double-clicks, triple-clicks, clicking out in the left margin, etc. Experiment a little and see what you can figure out.
In the B Unit, more editing features will be used. Some interesting and helpful features (like the Research area) are presented, and you'll benefit from the great information Word keeps track of for you.
Take the opportunity to become solid in all of these ideas. You won't find them really complicated, but they will have an effect on how efficiently you use this (and the other Microsoft) application.
If after you have worked through your units, you feel you need more instruction, use the CD that came with your textbook. The CD is very useful in reviewing the processes you perform in both Units A and B.
