NURSING CARE FOR PATIENTS WITH INFECTIOUS DISEASE
Catalog Description
58 - Nursing Care for Patients with Infectious Disease 1 unit
Nursing processes in the care of clients with infectious diseases with an emphasis on HIV and Hepatitis including pathophysiology, psychosocial and pharmacological issues, and preventive measures. Significance of specific nursing care measures, therapeutic health care giver attitudes and behaviors, and community resources available for caregivers and patients. Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of or concurrent enrollment in NURS 55, or 70, or equivalent. 1 hour.

Concurrency in NURS 55 or 70
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Identify and describe:
- pathophysiology of infectious diseases and common hospital and community infections;
- causation and epidemiology of infectious diseases
- methods of preventing infectious diseases;
- common clinical symptoms of infectious diseases and their medical management;
- psychosocial concerns of patients with infectious diseases and their caregivers;
- community (state and national) resources for patients with infectious diseases
- essentials involved in nursing care of patients with infectious diseases; and
- trends and research and evidence based practice.

2.Methodology involved in prevention of infectious diseases
3.Infectious disease symptom management
4.Psychosocial aspects
5.Community resources (local, state, and national); and
6.Nursing responsibilities in teaching.
