Context:

You are working for a food processing company. The company is located at the banks of the river Humber

with access to international shipping. The firm owns a shipping dock located on site.

The company’s IT systems need to be renewed. A decision has been made to revamp the IT infrastructure to make it

fit for purpose. The company has a warehouse which is based next to the dock and an office building which is about half a mile from the warehouse.

The access roads and cable trenches are all based on the grounds of the company.

There are 20 people working in the office all of which need their own computer to perform their duties. The company has an air conditioned server room in the office building.

The warehouse has 15 operatives who are in charge of stock control, logistics and dispatch. All incoming and outgoing products

have to be registered.

There are 6 security staff employed providing 24/7 security on the site. It is planned to put a CCTV system in place

to support security. The security system consisting of alarms, CCTV and access control is to be integrated with the IT infrastructure. The security system should be accessible from any computer on site as well as from the Internet for monitoring purposes. It is envisioned that the security company will provide offsite 24/7 monitoring services.

The following tasks need to be completed to achieve the following criteria: 1.2, 1.3, 1.4

1. Your company wants to control it's own website and manage an online ordering system.

To do this every office worker will need their own computer and access to the online ordering system.

In your report discuss the hardware you would choose to equip the office.

Consider the operating system you would install on office computers and provide reasons for your choice.

Identify and state the software applications you would install on the office computers.

2.

Consider at least one alternative option for the operating system.Compare and discuss both operating systems against one another. For one application software package of your choice e.g, Office Software, Database Application, Internet Browser, etc. consider an alternative and compare thetwo different packages. Make a qualified decision on which one to use.

3. Discusshow you would connect the office computers to a local network (LAN).

Decide whether you would you provide Internet access to all computers or just select some computers on an as need basis!

Howwould you control Internet access restrictions?

4.

What servers are necessary to facilitate all services required bythe company. Consider web services, Intranet, security, safety, storage, databases etc. Consider the connection between the server room and the office area and the warehouse.

Design a system on capturing the data for incoming and outgoing products by warehouse operatives.

5.

Find a way to connect the warehouse to the office. What technology could you use?

Discuss how to implement a security system consisting of alarms, access control and CCTV systems.

How would you ensure that the system you design has spare capacity at reasonable cost allowing upgrades and improvements, when and if required?

Merit

1. Formulate an IT strategy in an attempt to future proof the IT infrastructure used for stock control purposes

2. State resources to support your strategy and justify their use.

3. Make use of technical language and structure your report appropriately. Process evidence and complex information

Distinction

D1. Consider shortfalls of your report and research and suggest improvements if required

D3. Use innovative ideas
