MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT STUDIES
BACKGROUND
The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is commencing post-graduate studies (Masters and Post-graduate diploma) in disaster risk management and development studies under the aegis of the Center for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies (CDRMDS).
The dearth of qualified manpower and expertise in the field of disaster management in the community in particular and in Africa at large informed the need for the programmes.
OBJECTIVE OF THE PROGRAMMES
The aim of establishing the programmes is to produce high level cadre of professionals and academics in the field of disaster risk management and development. The goal is the enhancement of knowledge through capacity building for all stakeholders in disaster risk management in the country and beyond. The programmes will provide holistic academic environment to participants to understand disaster risk management and development specifically:-
- Fostering society’s understanding of their vulnerability to environmental problems, disasters, policies and programmes in Nigeria.
- Provide an enabling environment for research, discourse, seminars, conferences, workshops and lectures in disaster risk management and
- Build capacity in risk management applications in land use/ land cover change for security, environmental security in hot spots and critical regions delineation.
STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMMES
The programmes are taught and will include lectures on broad spectrum of themes and issues bordering on disaster risk reduction, development and governance, seminars, fieldworks, case studies and students’ personal research that can lead to a dissertation project report for the M.Sc. and Post-graduate Diploma, respectively.
The M.Sc. programme will run for 4 semesters while the post-graduate diploma will run for 2 semesters.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Admission into the M.Sc degree programme will be given to a graduate of the University of Maiduguri and any other University recognized by the Senate of the University of Maiduguri. Such candidates must have a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) at the first degree level. They must also have at least five (5) years post-graduation experience.
ADMISSION FORMS
Admission forms are available at the Center with the Administrative Secretary and are obtainable subject to the payment of the sum of ten thousand naira (N10,000.00) into the Center’s Account No.1250009182 with the Bank PHB, No.64, SirKashimIbrahimRoad,MaiduguriBornoState. Applicants are advised to contact the institutions they graduated from for their transcripts. All forms submitted after May 2010 will not be entertained.
