Membership of Professional Organisations:
Member of the Royal Entomological Society, London
Present Position:
Senior Entomologist; leader, Entomology sub-team, Pest and Disease Identification Team. Work includes insect identification in support of plant health policy and research into the development of modern diagnostic techniques for invertebrates.
Key Expertise and Experience:
Eighteen years experience of entomological identification with particular specialisation in the diagnosis of Thysanoptera and Agromyzidae (Diptera).
Represented the European Commission as an expert on Thrips palmi on missions to Guatemala (1994), The Netherlands (1995) and Italy (1997).
Taxonomic investigation of the Thysanoptera.
The development of biochemical assays for separating insect taxa of economic and quarantine significance: development of an isozyme electrophoresis assay for separating leaf miners of the genus Liriomyza; collaborative research towards the development of a diagnostic immunoassay for Thrips palmi.
The development of molecular assays for separating insect taxa of economic and quarantine significance, acting as a morphological specialist helping to define and refine molecular assays with molecular biology specialists: collaborative development of a real-time PCR assay for Thrips palmi; collaborative development of a multiplex real-time PCR assays for the separation of whitefly species in the genera Bemisia and Trialeurodes; collaborative research towards the development of direct DNA-sequence based diagnostics for thripid Thysanoptera and noctuid Lepidoptera; collaborative research towards the development of PCR-RFLP protocols for distinguishing species in the Tephritidae; co-ordinating morphological/molecular taxonomic investigation of a specific species-identity question in the whitefly genus Trialeurodes.
Short-term expert on European Union-funded Twinning Projects: with the Czech Republic, advising on molecular determination of potato cysts nematode species, electrophoretic and morphological determination of Liriomyza species, and morphological identification of Thysanoptera (2004); with Estonia, advising on general parameters for an entomological quarantine identification service, as well as morphological identification of Thysanoptera and Agromyzidae of economic significance (2005-06).
Leader of the IPPC Secretariat Expert Working Group for drafting the Diagnostic Protocol for Thrips palmi (2006-07).
Invited Thysanoptera specialist on the European Plant Protection Organisation Panel for Performing Pest Risk Analysis: Iris Yellow Spot Virus (2006).
Lecturer on the former MSc course, “Modern Approaches to Plant Health” at the University of Leeds (1995-1998).
Presented papers at International Conferences including: 2nd European Whitefly Symposium, Croatia (2004); 8th International Symposium on Thysanoptera and Tospoviruses, USA (2005).
