Position Title: Development Director
Classification: Full-Time, Exempt, pay based on experience

Organization Overview: Founded in 1992, Central Iowa Shelter & Services’ mission is toprovide low-barrier shelter, meals and support services at no cost to adults experiencing homelessness and to facilitate their move toward self-sufficiency.Annually,approximately 2,000 women and men experiencing homelessness receive emergency shelter and supportive services to help them move beyond homelessness.
CISS opened its new facility in September 2012, growing from 8,000 square feet and 96 beds to 42,000 square feet with 207 beds. It is equipped to provide expanded emergency shelter (150 beds); expanded transitional housing for Veterans (19 rooms); and 38 Project Based Section 8 Voucher efficiency apartments. CISS also provides an on-site health clinic, food pantry, clothing closet, classrooms and a 30-foot growing dome.
All guests and residents are provided evening and breakfast meals; access to shower and laundry facilities, a weekly medical clinic and group counseling; as well as individualized case management, life skills instruction and referrals to other community services and benefits.Programming continues to evolve to meet emerging homeless and community needs.
Position Overview:
The Development Director supports the mission of Central Iowa Shelter & Services and the clients served by designing and implementing the organization’s development strategy.The Development Director’s main directive is to achieve fundraising goals and foster on-going sponsor/donor relations and is also responsible for providing direction and leadership to the Development and Communications Coordinator and Volunteer/Outreach Coordinator.
This is a management team position that requires previous supervisory experience, excellent verbal and written communication skillsand effective time management skills. This individual must demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt, with the highest standards of behavior – exhibit a collaborative manner and work ethic. This is a full-time position that requires day hours, as well as occasional evening and weekend hours to cover committee meetings and events. This individual will be privy to confidential information about both donors and clients and will be expected to maintain confidentiality both within CISS and among outside parties.
Responsibilities:
Major Gifts:
- Responsible for developing and leading a comprehensive annual giving plan focused on major gifts and includes specific fundraising goals and targets for proposals, appeals, and campaigns
- Expands our major donor pool of $10,000+ gifts. This includes identification and qualification of major donor prospects and facilitating meetings and face-to-face solicitations for the CEO
- Ensures effective cultivation and training of select volunteer solicitors
- Reports to the board of directors on development efforts and is the management team representative at the Development and Outreach Committee meetings
- Conducts strategic cultivation and outreach to prospective donors throughout the year
Digital Marketing:
- Strategically plan and supervise the implementation of an ongoing, systematic digital email marketing program to keep in touch with our donors and ask for their support via our digital marketing software
- Plan and supervise the use of social media tools to advance the CISS mission and inform our supporters of opportunities to give, volunteer and advocate
Planned Giving:
- Developsstrategies to start a planned giving program
- Markets planned giving opportunities to CISS supporters
Foundation Grants Program:
- Works with program staff to develop grant applications; oversees prospect research; develops tracking and reporting systems and proposal submissions; and cultivates relationships with foundations
Gift Recording & Acknowledgement:
- Develops programs to acknowledge donors and nurture continued giving
- Works with the Development and Communications Coordinator to assure an accurate donor database, including individual giving histories, profiles and interactions
- Overseesproduction of reports for accounting and reconciliation of funds
- KeepsExecutive Director informed of trends and key donor information
Core Messages and Materials:
- Working with board members and other community partners, oversees the development of core messages and materials that advance CISS’s development initiatives
Management:
- Orients, trains, coaches, motivates, measures and evaluates designated staff in accordance with organizational policies, procedures and programs
- Conducts performance appraisals, administers employee recognition program, undertakes coaching and training programs as necessary and ensures discipline and correction action as appropriate
- Ensures that donor records are accurate and updated regularly
- Prepares reports for Executive Director, including analysis of gifts, trends and projections
- Tracks development goals and ensures completion of tasks
General Duties:
- Maintains and promotes a cooperative, collaborative environment in alignment with the philosophy and policies of the shelter
- Cultivates the values of Central Iowa Shelter & Services within the team and organization
- Responds to inquiries, phone calls, and e-mail in a timely and responsive manner
- Attends regular staff, Development Team and Executive Team Meetings
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications, Experience and Abilities
- The successful candidate must believe in the core values of Central Iowa Shelter & Services and be driven by the mission of the organization.
- B.A. required
- Proven management and leadership capabilities required.
- Experience working with executives in corporate environmentpreferred
- High energy, positive, “can-do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork and attention to detail; high degree of initiative
- Strong partnership building and event planning skills.
- This position will require a highly organized individual, with excellent follow up skills, as well as the ability to overcome objections and obstacles in the pursuit of the success of fund raising.
- Ability to manage multiple projects with demanding and competing deadlines, superior organizational skills and the ability to maintain a quality work place in a diverse, fast paced and changing environment.
- Experience with Bloomerang Donor Retention Software is a plus
- Ability to work independently as necessary.
- Demonstrates professional development by participating in and seeking out higher-level, innovative training opportunities.
- Excellent written and verbal skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in using Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and other applications as well as experience using and entering data into HMIS or other client databases. Must have the ability to obtain a ServicePoint license.
- Must possess valid Iowa Driver’s license as at times the successful candidate may drive a CISS vehicle.
