Who areServiceTrip Leaders?
Service Trip Leadersorganizeall triplogistics,runtheteamapplicationandselectionprocess,planpre-tripmeetings,coordinateessentialteamfundraisers, andprovideleadershipthroughout thetrip. Essentially,theyarethecenter-pointofallleadershipandorganization for their respectivetrips. LeaderswillcollaboratestartingintheearlyFallinaccomplishingtheirvariousduties.They work under the two Service Trips Program Coordinators (who work for CS3 and will also lead trips). Theyareexpectedto modelresponsibleleadershipbeforeandduring theservicetrip,workingindependently aswellasincollaborationwitheachother, Center for Service,Spirituality and Social Justice,andoftenotherdepartmentsoncampussuchastheLGBTQoffice.
SkillsandObjectives
A successfulleader isanengagedcitizen—positive,self-motivated,open-minded, committed,andpassionateaboutserviceandthe community.Asa partofServiceTrips, leadersaim to:
- Increase individualunderstandingofcommunityneedsandissuesthrougheducationanddialogue,bothinpre-tripmeetingsandduring thetrip.
- Leadworkteamsthatpartnerwithlocalcommunityorganizationstomeet theneeds(bothphysicallyandsocially)in thehost community.
- Leadgroupreflectionthathelpsparticipantsarticulateunderstandingofone’sself, one’spositionandprivilege,andhowthataffectone’sresponsibilityandworkwithin the community.
- Leadersincreasehis/her professionalskillsincludingcommunication, organization,managementandprogram development.
Actingin a leadershiprole, the leadersfacilitatethe opportunities ofparticipants to:
- Enhanceculturalunderstanding
- Buildstronger relationshipswithteammembers,administrators,andnewcommunities
- Increasetheirskillsinintrospectionandemotionalintelligence
- Increaseabilityto articulatepersonalvaluesandlifepriorities
- Seeareas ofneedintheir-homecommunityin anewway after experiencinganotherculture
- Becomemoreengagedincommunityserviceat Dickinsonuponreturn tocampus
Expectations
In additiontothe abovequalifications,all leaders mustattendaweekendServiceTripLeader retreat in September 2017.Theretreatwillcoverallexpectations fortheyear, andwillincludein-depthskillstrainingforleadingtrips. Meetingswilloccur (roughly)on a weeklybasisthroughout theyear.Leaders must beingood academicandconduct standingwith thecollege.
