Contest: Nail Care

Contest Chairperson: Debbie Neatock

Contest Site: TCHS Brandywine

Objective: To evaluate each competitor’s preparation for employment and to recognize outstanding students for excellence and professionalism in the field of nail care.

Eligibility: Open to active Skills USA members enrolled in programs with nail care as the occupational objective.

Equipment and Materials supplied to each competitor by the site:

  • Table and Chairs

Contestant must bring the following equipment, tools and supplies:

  1. Safety glasses for contestant and model
  2. Hand sanitizer
  3. White terry towels (no holes or stains) or disposable towels
  4. Water dispenser
  5. All items necessary to complete two sculpture acrylic nails. Dappen dishes mush have covers; monomer, polymer and primer must be from same manufacturer; choice of two of three basic acrylic colors (white, clear or pink) must be used to complete two tone French sculptured nails.
  6. All items necessary to complete two tip applications and nail wraps. Activator / catalyst, resin/ adhesive and fiber must be from the same manufacturer
  7. Dark Crème lacquer/polish
  8. All items necessary to complete flat paint nail art application. Supplies are limited to polish, lacquers, paints and sealer. SEE ITEMS NOT ALLOWED. Top coat may be used as sealer
  9. Disinfectant tray system with disinfecting solution
  10. All items necessary for a basic manicure which includes a hand and arm massage
  11. A description of nail art to be created during the contest
  12. Portable kit organizer (for transportation of all items necessary for the contest

Note: No mixed chemicals. The same manufacturer must produce the acrylic polymer and monomer used for sculptured application. The same manufacturer must also produce the resin and catalyst used for tips and wrap application.

Supplies NOT Allowed:

  • Ridge filler
  • Chamois buffers
  • Lotion or oil
  • Drills (power, battery or manual)
  • French tips
  • 3D nail art
  • Stencils
  • Decals
  • Air brushing
  • Cast moldings
  • Press-on nails or tips
  • Nail strips or gems, skins, feathers, rhinestones, threads, fabrics foils, beads, tapes, jewelry, decals or stencils, jewelry
  • Glitter or glitter polish
  • Electric files/ drills
  • Top coats or base coats. Top coat or sealer is allowed for nail art application only

Note: All supplies will be subjected to a “kit check”. Any other items brought by the contestant will be subject to the approval by the technical committee and must be declared at the time of the pre-contest site kit checks.

Contest Guidelines

  1. Contestants are not permitted to touch their models before the competition begins or between segments
  2. All contestants must bring a model for competition free from any polish applications
  3. All segments of work must be completed in the specified time during competition. (For example, during the tip and wrap segment, no work may be completed or started on the sculptured, nail art or polish application)
  4. Disqualification or penalty points taken can occur for the following:
  5. Any rule not followed, with NO exceptions
  6. Leaving competition area before completion of model (applies both to contestant and model) without proper escort
  7. Unauthorized use of a product that is not allowed or that doesn’t appear in the above listing
  8. Any product that appears to have been altered
  9. Conversation between contestant and model is limited. Communication with observers, judges and other contestants is prohibited during the contest
  10. Pedicure is eliminated due to time constraint at district level, be advised pedicure will be a contest guideline at state level

Scope of the Contest:

Models should have NO polish on either hand.

  1. Table Set Up. Will consist only of items needed for specific contest

application in progress. Basic supplies may be left on table throughout the competition

1.1Show Safety in handling products

1.2Set up table to consist of items needed for the specific contest application in progress (i.e., if manicure procedure is in progress, nail art supplies are not visible at this time)

1.3Ensure that all bottles and containers are securely closed after use

1.4Demonstrate when and how safety glasses are used

1.5Perform sanitary practices

1.6Ensure that all implements and files are brought to contest cleaned, disinfected or new and are labeled as such

1.7Ensure that any implement or file that becomes contaminated during the contest is disposed of or cleaned and disinfected

1.8Perform safe usage of implements and tools

1.9Verify there are no cuts on surrounding skin

1.10Verify there are no cuticle abrasions

1.11Apply knowledge of sanitation and disinfection, how they are accomplished and how they differ

1.12Define sanitation and disinfection

1.13Show cleanliness and organization of the working environment

1.14Ensure that the workspace is clean and organized throughout the contest

1.15Verify that only needed items are out on the table

  1. Perform a natural nail care manicure on the left hand only.

This will include filing, softening of the cuticle (no cutting), hand massage and polish application. Dark polish will be applied to 3 fingers, and the other 2 nails are to be prepared with background color appropriate for nail art application

2.28Clean and sanitize all work areas

  1. Apply sculptured nails with a white tip and pink or clear to form the index and middle fingers of the right hand. No polish or oil is to be applied.

3.1Build an acrylic nail

3.2Ensure product control; clarity/no bubbles, smile line

3.3Verify that the cuticle and nail groove are smooth and thin

3.4Identify that the contour, the highest point of the nail, is in the center at the natural stress area

3.5Ensure that the shape and length is consistent on each finger

3.6Identify that the surface finish is smooth, with a high-gloss shine

  1. Apply nail tips with fiberglass or silk overlays to the ring and little

fingers of the right hand. No polish, oil or lotions are to be applied

30 minutes

4.1Demonstrate proper application and blending of a nail tip

4.2Perform tip application (i.e., fit and alignment)

4.3Perform tip blending

4.4Perform product control (i.e., no adhesive seepage)

4.5Perform tool control

4.6Demonstrate the proper application of a nail wrap and resin

4.7Wrap material application (i.e., cover nail completely, not on skin, and is adhered securely to the nail)

4.8Identify that cuticle and nail groove are smooth and thin

4.9Identify that the contour, the highest part of the nail, is in the center at the natural stress area)

4.10Ensure that the shape and length is consistent on each finger

4.11Ensure that the surface finish is smooth, with a high-gloss shine

4.12Preparation of a natural nail for any type of enhancement

  1. Perform wearable nail art application to the two finger previously

prepared on the left hand in accordance with the previously submitted theme. Theme should be drawn on 3X5index card, and placed on the table next to nail art set up.

***Glitter will not be allowed either in the nail polish or separately applied

5.1Show proper application of nail lacquer, including any necessary cleanup
