Need for the Standard
WarrenKnapp noted that he gets a lot of requests for quotes on Bucket Elevator systems which cite reference to CEMA Standards. Attorneys also make general reference to CEMA Standards. The problem is that we do not have any standards in this area. This reinforces the validity of the need for the project upon which we have embarked.
Chapter Development
Warren indicated that we still have only four chapter drafts. We need to increase the input of draft documents even if they are not complete. Once the drafts are available, the rest of the group can contribute to filling them in based on their particular expertise.
He reminded the group that he had developed a list of reference materials for the different chapters. A copy of those references will be attached to these minutes.
The group agreed that we should try to bring in DIN criteria since those are so well referenced in the international marketplace for Bucket Elevators.
In the area of Belt Selection, it was agreed that Steel Core Belts for Elevators, which are becoming very popular, are unique enough that they need a separate treatment while developing the book. It can be a separate chapter for now and may, at a later time, be integrated into the Belt Selection Chapter (BH-09), or remain as a separate chapter. Going forward, Raul Morales volunteered to develop a chapter BH-17: Steel Core Belts.
With regard to BH-13: Horsepower Calculations, Kris Gilliland asked for some guidance. He is concerned that he has only a few formulas. Several relevant components of the calculations were discussed. Warren - I suggest that you take a look at the 2nd edition of Hartsell's “Belt Conveyors and Bucket Elevators” in which he explains quite a bit about the details of how he came about the formulas.
The issue of Soft Starts & Couplings was discussed. It was agreed that CEMA Engineering Standard 351-2007 “Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Selection for Screw Feeders” is relevant to Bucket Elevator calculations and will be adapted for the Bucket Elevator book. Raul Morales with help Kris with this.
Next Meeting: first Friday of November – November 2, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. CST.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 10:35 a.m.
