FIRST AID: RESPONDING TO EMERGENCIES
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Lecture and demonstration for responding to emergencies such as; respiratory emergencies, cardiac emergencies, bleeding & shock, soft tissue injuries, musculoskeletal injuries, specific injuries, medical emergencies, substance misuse & abuse, heat & cold exposure and rescue moves with skill training in appropriate areas.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to:
A.Explain how the EMS system works and the citizen responder's role in the EMS system.
B.Explain what happens in the body if one or more body systems fail to function properly.
C.Identify and care for choking and other breathing emergencies.
D.Identify the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease, and injury, and describe how to control them.
E.Recognize the signals of a possible heart attack, and describe how to care for someone who is experiencing persistent chest pain.
F.Identify the signals of cardiac arrest, and demonstrate how to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until advanced emergency medical care arrives.
G.Identify life-threatening bleeding, and demonstrate how to control it.
H.Identify the signals of shock, and describe how to minimize the effects of shock.
I.Identify the signals of various soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, and demonstrate how to care for them.
J.Identify the signals of medical emergencies, including poisoning and heat and cold emergencies, and describe both general and specific care for medical emergencies.
K.Describe when and how to move a victim in an emergency situation.
-Successful achievement of these course objectives will result in certification in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR. An academic grade will be given regardless of certification.
ACADEMIC GRADING:
There will be five (5) written tests over First Aid material; one (1) written test over CPR material; evaluations to test your practical skills in First Aid and CPR; quizzes will occur in lecture, undetermined as to how many; and a comprehensive final exam. Study guides are to be submitted electronically by 9 a.m. on the day they are due. Students are also to bring one competed copy of the study guide with them to lab on the day they are due. Study guides are worth 10 points each. Your academic grade will be based on a percentage of the final points possible as described below (+/- grades will be assigned from within these ranges):
A+ 98-100 A 94-97 A- 92-93 B+ 90-91 B 85-89 B- 83-84 C+ 81-82 C 75-80 C- 73-74 D+ 71-72 D 67-70 D- 65-66 F 64 and below
-Successful completion of all skills.
-80% or better on the written CPR test and the Final Exam.

ADMINISTRATIVE WITHDRAWAL POLICY
Administrative Withdrawal: A basic requirement of this course is that you will participate in class and conscientiously complete writing and reading assignments. Keep in touch with me if you are unable to attend class or complete an assignment on time. If you miss more than half our class meetings within the first four weeks of the semester without contacting me, you will be administratively withdrawn from this section. For classes that meet twice a week, you may be withdrawn if you miss more than four classes in the first four weeks. For classes that meet once a week, you may be withdrawn if you miss more than two classes in the first four weeks. Administrative withdrawal may have academic, financial and financial aid implications. Administrative withdrawal will take place after the full refund period, and if you are administratively withdrawn from the course you will not be eligible for a tuition refund. If you have questions about the administrative withdrawal policy at any point during the semester, please contact me.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS:
It is commonly accepted principle in higher education court cases that by matriculating at a university, a student agrees to abide by its rules. The university is obligated to publish its rules; the student is obligated to read them, understand them and comply with them.
PERSONAL NOTE;
During the semester, if you find that life stressors are interfering with your academic or personal success, consider contacting Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). All IUPUI students are eligible for counseling services at minimal fees. CAPS also performs evaluations for learning disorders and ADHD; fees are charged for testing. ADAPTIVE EDUCATIONAL SERVICES
Students needing accomodations because of a disability will need to register with Adaptive Educational Services (AES) and complete the appropriate forms issued by AES before accomodations will be given. AES will provide you with additional assistance with note taking and test taking. AES is located in Taylor Hall, UC 100. You can also reach the office by calling 274-3241. ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is critical. For ACADEMIC POINTS, 10 points will be deducted for every class (lecture or lab) missed after six (6) for weekday sections or 20 points after two (2) missed classes for the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Saturday sections from your total accumulation of points or 20 points after one (1) missed class during Summer sessions. (i.e.:You have 6 or 2 or 1 time(s) to miss class no questions asked!)
However, there will be several labs that you can NOT miss! Students missing those labs will have twenty points deducted from their CPR skills score. Your instructor will announce these dates. Students arriving after attendance taking is completed will be counted absent for that class.
