Cell Simile Project

In the Cell Simile Project, you will draw/construct a poster of a plant cell using images of items from the “real world”. You will compare these images to the structure and function of each organelle in the cell. Finally, you will explain the comparison in a “caption”, written as a “simile”.

For example, we have been referring to the nucleus of the cell as the “control center” of the cell. Can you think of an object or item from the world around you that would illustrate this idea? How about the mitochondrion, which we have been calling the “powerhouse” of the cell?

Each image that you choose for each part of the cell must be accompanied by a caption (simile). The caption must be written neatly, using complete sentences, correct spelling and grammar, and final drafted in pen.

The organelles to be included in your poster are:

1)  Cell Wall

2)  Cell Membrane

3)  Nucleus

4)  Mitochondria

5)  Chloroplasts

6)  Ribosomes

7)  Vacuole

8)  Cytoplasm

The information contained in your notes and handouts in the Classwork Section of your Science Binder will be very useful in choosing and explaining your similes. The Pages 88-94 of the Science textbook are another excellent resource!

For materials you will receive a large piece of poster paper and may use colored pencils, pens, crayons, pictures from magazines, newspapers, or the internet, scissors, glue, printed text, or just about any other medium that your creative mind can imagine!!!

You must have ALL the images and similes drawn in rough draft form BEFORE you will be allowed to actually create the poster. Your teacher will approve your plan before providing you with the poster paper.

Good Luck! Be Creative! Everyone is an artist somehow (even scientists – it’s true)!
