Cell Analogy Project

Introduction:

You have seen me use the example of a mall to explain the function of organelles within the cell. Now you will have to come up with your own way of describing the organelles within the cell. You will need to come up with your analogy.

Here are some example analogies that may work for you: amusement park, school, library, farm, city, the inner workings of a car, a medieval castle

Please choose an analogy and ONE type of cell (plant or animal), and check off each organelle as you add it to your project. A sample analogy for a cell is given below. (You may NOT use the mall as your analogy, since I already used this in class!)

Plant Cell

 Nucleus Mitochondrion

 Nuclear Envelope cell membrane

 Chloroplast ribosomes

 Cell Wall Endoplasmic reticulum

 vacuole Chromosome/DNA

Animal Cell

 Nucleus Mitochondrion

 Chromosome/DNA cell membrane

 lysosome ribosomes

 Nuclear Envelope Endoplasmic reticulum

 vacuole cytoskeleton

Sample: The Cell as a Mall

Mall Part / Function / Organelle
Mall Office / Makes decisions for the mall, orders materials, in charge of all employees / Nucleus
Cashier/Store Clerk / Process the goods that people are buying at the mall / Ribosome
Receptionist Desk / People must come to spot to be let into the main office / Nuclear Membrane

Requirements

1.  You must fill in the organelle chart which compares the organelles with the analogies you have chosen. You must be thorough and accurate in your descriptions of organelle functions and your explanation of your reasons for selecting the analogies.

2.  You must create an analogy drawing with each “analogy part” in the location it would be found in a cell. You should put the name of the analogy part (ex: conveyor belt) and the cell organelle it is representing next to the appropriate picture.
