Prerequisites:CELL1010 and CHEM 1080
Course Description:Laboratory exercises emphasizing concepts in cell, molecular, and developmental biology. Designed for majors in the biological sciences.
credit hours: 1

Program outcome: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to solve biological problems through experimentation, which includes the collection, analysis and interpretation of data.

Specific learning outcomes:Upon completion of this lab class, successful students will be able to:

- Use metric system and different lab techniques such as microscopy, DNA extraction, DNA fingerprinting and gene transfer.

- Differentiate between different type of cells.

- Determine the chemical composition of cells and understand their structure and function.

- Test for important macromolecules and identify their sources.

- Determine the healthy proportions of nutrients in a healthy diet.

- Understand the physical, chemical properties and kinetics of an enzyme.

- Explain DNA structure, describe the procedure of its isolation and its use in forensic.

- Understand the relation between gene and protein.

- Understand the process of transferring a gene from a living organism to another one.

- Explain the first steps of animal embryonic development.

Required students resources: General Biology Lab; by Perry, Morton and Perry; Cengage Learning, Customized Edition for Tulane University, 2014.

Grading:Gradesare determined as follows:

- Eightquizzes/lab reports at 10 points each.

- One midterm and a final examat 50 points each. Each exam includes the previously covered lab sessions.

93.3≥ A, 90 ≥A- < 93.3, 86.67 ≥ B+ < 90, 83.3 ≥ B < 86.67, 80 ≥ B-83.33, 76.67 ≥ C+< 80, 73.33 ≥ C < 76.67, 70 ≥ C-< 73.33, 66.67≥ D+ < 70, 63.33 ≥ D < 66.67, 60 ≥ D- < 63.33, 60 < F

Missed Class:No make-up is given for any missed lab session or exam, except for sickness.

If you are sick, you notify me as soon as possible. A make-up is given only for the quiz or the exam. If the missed lab session is still running that week, you may make it up with another group.

Code of Academic Conduct:This Code applies to all undergraduate students, full-time, and part-time, in Tulane University. The full text is available at: By accepting admission to Tulane University, each student accepts its regulations and acknowledges the right of the university to take disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion, for conduct judged unsatisfactory or disruptive. The student has the right to be heard at an Honor Beard hearing and retains the right to appeal a decision of the Honor Board hearing panel.

It is now an Honor Code violation (cheating) to have a cellphone or other electronic device out during a quiz or an exam. Unless explicitly allowed by the instructor, electronic devices (such as cell phones, notebooks, calculators, etc.) are not allowed to be out of backpacks or purses during quizzes and exams. These electronic devices must be packed away and turned off. Any student who is caught with one of these devices out will have his/her test taken and will be charged with the Honor Code violation of cheating.

Accessibility statement: Any student with disabilities or other special needs is invited to bring these concerns or requests for special accommodations to the Goldman Center for Student Accessibility. Once accommodations are approved by the Goldman Center staff, the student is encouraged to notify the instructor as early in the semester as possible to avoid unnecessarily delaying accommodations. or (504-8)62-8433
