DIPLOMA OF MERIT

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Student must maintain 90% attendance average each year.

Student will complete 40 hours of volunteer service, preferably in conjunction with a CHS service club or organization.

Student will maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.

Student must select at least two areas of emphasis and is then expected to complete the requirement of each department prior to receiving the Diploma of Merit.

ENGLISH – Julie King

Student must maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPA in at least 4 English classes.

Student must successfully complete either an Advanced Placement class or a concurrent enrollment class in English or take a) 2 years of Journalism or b) one year of Creative Writing where they have been published 3 times. Two of those times must be in periodicals outside of CHS.

FINE ARTS

Student will select an area of emphasis of either: Music, Visual Arts, Drama, or Dance.

Dance – Tami Farish

Students need to enroll in at least 4 semesters of dance courses in the four years of high school.

Students must have a 3.5 Cumulative GPA in all dance classes.

Drama – Zach Trotter

Student needs to enroll in at least three drama courses in the four years of high school.

Student needs to participate in two shows per year.

Student needs to participate at region/state drama and Shakespear competition for two years.

Student must be a member in at least one performance group for four years: Winds, Strings, or Vocal.

Student must participate in an audition group for two years in one of the above listed areas.

Student must have 100% attendance in all performances including concerts, festivals, and parades during all four years. Please see your music teacher for concerns.

Student must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA in all performance music classes.

Visual Arts – Brad Stacey

Student must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA in all visual arts classes.

Student needs to participate in Art Guild activities for two of the four high school years.

Student needs to enroll in five semester classes of visual art classes, including Foundations of Art three semesters of Advanced visual arts.

Ceramics – Brandon Wainwright

Student must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA in all visual arts classes.

Student needs to participate in one year of the ceramics club.

Student needs to enroll in five semester classes of ceramics.

FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE- LeAnn Leavitt

Student must take any four Family and Consumer Science Classes, one being an advanced course Pro Start, Clothing II, Nutrition, or Foods II.

Student must have a cumulative 3.5 GPA.

Student must be an active member of FCCLA for at least 2 years. (participate in at least 3 activities)

FOREIGN LANGUAGE – Jeff Corry

Student must take a Foreign Language class for three years. Two years must be in the same language.

Student must maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPA in Foreign Language classes.

Journalism And Yearbook – Kristin Brinkerhoff / KodiQuarnberg

Student must be on the school paper or yearbook staff for junior and senior year.

Student must contribute to those publications in a meaningful manner, as determined by the advisor.

Student must achieve a 3.0 cumulative GPA in Journalism and/or Yearbook classes

LEADERSHIP – Danna Esplin

Student must be involved in student government or another Cedar High leadership role for at least three years.

Student must complete a minimum of 40 hours of community service each year during high school. Service hours that do not qualify include: paid community service, hours you get high school credit for, court appointed hours, work on political campaigns.

Student must complete Leadership Tracking Form and attach it to the application. See Mrs. Esplin for more details.

Student must achieve a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

MATHEMATICS – Annie Draper

The student must have a 3.0 cumulative or greater GPA in their math classes.

Student must have taken 3 years of mathematics in high school, where one of the courses is Secondary III and another is either AP Calculus, AP Statistics or Math 1050.

We would prefer that the student completes 10 of their service hours by tutoring other students in math.

Student must provide either a portfolio of their best work or complete a math project, which has been approved by the math department.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION – Laura Bailey

Students must have taken at least 5 semester classes of P.E. Student must demonstrate good citizenship with nothing lower than satisfactory “S”. Athletics cannot count as part of the P.E. classes.

Student must provide a signature from the coach for the sport played at Cedar High School.

Student completes a resume of accomplishments in the selected area, which is due with application.

The resume would reflect the following priorities: student have participated on a athletic team in at least one of the following sports: Football, Volleyball, Soccer, X-Country, Tennis, Golf, Basketball, Swimming, Wrestling, Track, Baseball, Softball, Drill and Cheer.

Student must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA, or better, in all Physical Education courses.

SCIENCE– Eric Fieldsted

Student must take four years of Science in both physical and life areas (Earth Systems will count as a science class but additional physical science will be needed) and at least one AP or 1010 class: AP Chemistry Chem 1010 Bio 1010 Bio 1610 AP Physics Nutrition 1020

Student must average a 3.0 GPA in each science class.

SOCIAL SCIENCE– Mickey Talbot

Student must maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPA in Social Science classes.

Student must successfully complete either an Advance Placement class or a concurrent enrollment class in Social Science.

Student must take 4 classes in Graphic Arts and 3-D Animation.

Student must have a cumulative 3.5 GPA in the above listed courses.

Student must create a portfolio.
