Areas of Study for class challenge 2016: 5th Grade

Ø  Know the number, names, and locations of the world’s continents and oceans, and know the largest and smallest of each.

Ø  Know which three large countries make up the majority of the continent of North America and the capitals of each.

Ø  Know the name and location of the Catholic church’s capital (Vatican City, which is located within the city of Rome in the country of Italy, in Europe)

Ø  Know the name of the longest river, largest lake, and highest mountain in the United States. Know in what state the highest U.S. mountain peak is located.

Ø  Know the name of the five longest rivers, largest lakes, largest subtropical deserts, highest mountain peaks in the world and the continent where each is located.

Ø  Know the largest and smallest U.S. state, southernmost U.S. state, the northern- most U.S. state, the most and least populous U.S. state.

Ø  Know the longest mountain range in the United States and South America and the mountain range where the highest mountain peaks in the world are located

Ø  Know the name and capital and location of the largest country in the world.

Ø  Know the location, number, and names of the Great Lakes. Be able to point out the lakes by name on a map.

Ø  Know the name of the river that forms part of the border between Mexico and the United States

Ø  Know the name of the largest island in the world that is not a continent

Ø  Know the name of the largest lake in the U.S., Africa, and South America

Ø  Know the name of the highest mountain peak in Europe, Africa, and South America

Ø  Know the name and location of the largest desert in Asia, Africa, and the U.S.

Ø  Know the name of the country and the capital where Bethlehem and Jerusalem are found.

Ø  Know the name of the largest state and highest mountain peak in the contiguous 48 states.

Ø  Know the names, capitals, and locations of all of the 50 U.S. states

Additional Areas of Study for the Bee Contestants:

·  Be able to name and identify the location of the Mediterranean, Adriatic, Red, and Caribbean Seas, the Gulf of Mexico, Hudson Bay, Chesapeake Bay, the Bering Strait, The English Channel, The Persian Gulf, Madagascar, Greenland, Iceland, the Canary Islands, and the Aleutian Islands.

·  Know the capitals of India, England, France, Italy, South Korea, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Australia, North Korea, Japan, China, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Haiti, Cuba, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Ireland, The Philippines, and be able to identify the countries on an outline map.
