Creative Industries 2: Creative and Cultural Crafts

Description of unit

This unit will allow learners to gain an understanding of a specialised craft. The emphasis will be on developing skills within a chosen area through the use of materials, techniques and processes.

Creativity and Innovation are the key factors within this unit. Learners will have the opportunity to show their understanding through working to a brief. They will finish the unit with the knowledge that research, planning, developing ideas creatively, working within time restraints, interpersonal skills and presenting a craft are all important elements in any Craft.

The learner will also be made aware of the importance of understanding the health and safety issues whilst using tools and equipment within their chosen pathway and the environmental issues that may be associated with the Specialist Craft.

What you must learn:

Section 1: Health and Safety requirements

Understand health and safety legislation affecting studio and workshop environments:

  • Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations 1988.
  • Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) regulations 1977.

Understand and explain health and safety rules and procedures relating to studio and workshop environments relating to:

  • the handling of materials;
  • Use of machinery and equipment;
  • Materials choice;
  • Tools;
  • Techniques;
  • Safe working facilities.

Section 2: Research and practice Craft techniques

  • Research the specific craft.
  • Show evidence of research through imagery and discussion, must include employment prospects etc
  • Practice skills through workshops.
  • Through tutor lead workshops the student must show a portfolio of practiced skills.
  • Skills must be recorded in as many mediums as possible, for example: word doc with screen prints, photographed using tools of the particular craft, video recordings of practiced skills
  • Evaluate and discuss own work.
  • This will show evidence of communication skills, for example: audio recording of experience

Section 3: Develop skills in relation to Craft

  • Working to a brief
  • Organisation, planning, dealing with time restraints etc
  • The brief will be followed using the following structure
  • Ideas development (Mind-Map, Mood board etc)
  • A written Proposal of idea
  • What is the idea?
  • Who is the most target audience?
  • Equipment list
  • Materials list
  • Cost of materials
  • Source of materials
  • Specialist equipment requirements and sources/prices
  • Schedule (Detailed list of dates to completion)
  • A document of progress with images explaining what, when and how.
  • Importance of exhibiting own work (discuss methods of exhibitingown work) Discuss and evaluate own work
  • Peer evaluation
  • A questionnaire for peers to comment on final work.

Assessment strategies

Evidence of learning may be collected from a well planned activity allowing learners toresearch various creative styles to identify techniques employed. It is essential that learnersare exposed to various methods and have the opportunity to compare techniques.

Health and safety must be examined and a risk assessment should be drawn up.

Learners should be encouraged to use photographic evidence, record processesin their portfolios and present findings through presentations to illustrate how they reached their final piece.

Assessment Criteria

Band C

  • Show a basic understanding of health and safety issues while practicing a specific craft.
  • Show a basic understanding of environmental issues while practicing a specific craft.
  • Show evidence of researching specific craft.
  • Show evidence of practicing a specific craft.
  • Show evidence of analysing own work.
  • Show evidence of following a brief.
  • Discussing and critique own work.

Band B

  • Show an understanding of health and safety issues while practicing a specific craft using illustrative examples.
  • Show an understanding of environmental issues while practicing a specific craft using illustrative examples.
  • Provide detailed evidence of your ability to use a good range of reference sources when researching specific Craft.
  • Provide detailed evidence of practicing a specific craft with illustrative examples.
  • Show evidence of analysing own work, discussing in detail.
  • Show a confident attempt at responding to the brief showing periodical stages of progression in a report.
  • Creatively critique own work using illustrative language associated with the chosen craft.

Band A

  • Have a confident understanding of health and safety issues while practising a specific craft using illustrative examples and expressing own opinion.
  • Show an understanding of environmental issues while practicing a specific craft using detailed examples.
  • Show evidence that you can work confidently while using equipment in the specific craft environment.
  • work independently to produce an excellent range of reference sources in research techniques.
  • work confidently and independently within a specific craft showing.
  • Produce a confident account of the work undertaken discussing negative and positive approaches.
  • Show evidence of working to a brief, discussing stages of progress confidently in a detailed report.
  • Discussing and critique in detail final craft piece.

Guidance and Exemplar assessment

Portfolios of evidence should include:

  • Cover Sheet, with learner name, signatures, mark, centre number etc.
  • IV Documentation and signatures.
  • Mark Sheet, showing total marks and how the learner scored this must also include:
  • AO1 (Underpinning knowledge) Grade breakdown
  • AO2 (Practical) Grade breakdown
  • AO3 (Evaluations) Grade breakdown
  • My Diary and signatures.
  • My Records and signatures.
  • Tasks and/or assignments.

Portfolios can be printed out or saved on CD/memory stick/hard drive/server.
