Engage

[mental warm-up; personal connection]

·  Repeat the Opening Prayer’s last line: Thank you, God, for sending your Son to show us the way to you.

·  Ask: Who is God’s Son? (Jesus)

·  PCG 97 – “What Do You Wonder?”

·  Play CD - “Love God” - Songs of Scripture, Grades 1-3, Track 4

·  Ask learners: What is this song about? [love]

·  Focus learners on the concept of “love” by asking these or similar questions:

o  Who do you love?

How do you show (mom, dad, sister, brother, etc.) that you love him/her? [by caring, by sharing, by saying kind words, by helping]

·  Jesus, the Son of God, teaches us how to love ourselves and others.

Essential Question [visible as a mental anchor]

[focus; frames the lesson]

[An Essential Question is one that is shared at the beginning of a lesson and then is revisited at the end of the lesson. It is your focus as CATECHIST; it keeps you “on track” so that you delve deeper into faith concepts important for lifelong learning. For your LEARNERS, it is their “cognitive bookend,” their goal for learning to self-evaluate their understanding of the lesson’s concepts.]

·  Share (and post) this lesson’s Essential Question: What do you know about the life of Jesus Christ on earth?

Explore

[pre-assessment of faith concept]

[K1, K2 & U2]

·  Who is Jesus Christ? [Big Idea] (Pause for answers to discern what learners already know.)

To deepen their understanding, select from the following pictures in the text (or gather others online or in the room) to illustrate the life of Jesus on earth. Catechist will ask learners what they see Jesus doing in these pictures.

o  PCG 26 - birth of Jesus with Mother Mary

o  PCG 56 - Jesus as a boy helping Joseph who was a carpenter (showing love for his family by helping his earthly father)

o  PCG 97 - Jesus with the Holy Spirit (dove) being baptized (showing love for his heavenly father, God)

o  PCG 100 - Jesus teaching the elders at the Jewish temple (showing love for others)

o  PCG 155 - Jesus working miracles, healing the blind man (showing love for others)

o  PCG 190-191 – Jesus with his disciples (showing love for his friends)

o  PCG 210 – Jesus praying (showing love for God)

·  Summary: Jesus is the Son of God. He was born into a Jewish family. He lived with his mother Mary and his earthly father, Joseph, who was a carpenter. He lived on the Earth for 33 years.

Explain & Check for Understanding

[direct teaching, infused with Scripture, & group work]

[U1 & U2]

·  Jesus shows us how to love others and help those in need. We learn about many kind things that Jesus did when we read the Bible; the Word of God. (Show a Bible and remind learners of the Bible lesson done previously.)

·  Scripture: John 6:2-14 (Feeding of the 5000)

o  Focus for Listening: Listen as I read this Scripture. Be ready to answer these questions: What does Jesus do in this story (parable)? What do Jesus’ actions tell us about Him?

o  Read aloud the Scripture [The Catholic Children’s Bible, St. Mary’s Press, page 1665]

o  Next, pose the above questions. Discuss.

o  Checking for Understanding: Ask: What did you learn about Jesus from this Bible story? (Answers will vary: he feed lots of people with very little food>miracle; he helps people>he’s kind & thoughtful.)

o  To summarize and debrief, read aloud “Understand It!” [The Catholic Children’s Bible, St. Mary’s Press, page 1667]

·  Summary/Closure; In the book of John, we learn that Jesus showed his love by helping people in need; they were hungry so he multiplied the loaves and fish so all could eat. Jesus nourishes our bodies, too, and our souls when we go to Holy Eucharist. This story is just one example in the Bible where Jesus shows his divine love. We are all asked to love and care for others to bring God’s love to our world, especially those in our family and at school.

Evaluate

[individual accountability]

·  Return to this lesson’s Essential Question. What do you know about the life of Jesus Christ on earth?

·  Distribute unlined paper to each learner. Ask them to fold it in thirds (a trifold).

·  We are to be followers of Jesus Christ. Draw or write at least one answer in each section.

What do you know about Jesus Christ? / What is one thing Jesus did that showed he loved and was kind to other people? / What is one thing YOU can do this week to show that you are kind to someone?

·  (Optional) Play the CD “Love God” while learners are working. Snap a few pictures of finished tri-folds to share with other catechists. Allow learners to take their tri-folds home and share with their family members.

Debrief / Self-Reflect

[mystagogy; transfer beyond the lesson]

·  Summarize the lesson to bring closure: In today’s lesson we learned about the life of Jesus on earth and how he showed love and kindness to others. We are to follow his example by loving our family and friends and everyone we meet.

·  We created a tri-fold. With whom will you share your ideas? What will you tell your family about how Jesus lived his life here on earth?

Closing Prayer

·  PCG 128 – “Let Us Pray” / Prayer of Petition

·  Say: Kind and gracious Lord, help me to reflect your love and to care for the needs of others. Help me to follow Jesus’ life on earth and to love my family the way he loved his.

·  Pray the Sign of the Cross.
