Student Feedback (if any)

Note: You must answer all the questions correctly to achieve the criteria identified

Q1 must be successfully answered to achieve criteria 3.1

Q1 Technologies

All sources of information should be correctly referenced.

Write a report which researches, compares and contrasts the two main technologies (TTL and CMOS) used in digital logic systems and circuits.

Q2 must be successfully answered to achieve criteria 3.2

Q2 Design

Design a logic circuit to meet the following criteria:

A seven segment display is to be used to spell out a given four letter word. The word can be spelled once, or continuously.

You will probably require;

  • A pulse signal generator. You may use a proprietary device, for example a 555 timer, or create your own.
  • A clock divider (to reduce the pulse/ clock frequency). Discrete devices should be used.
  • A counter/ shift register. Discrete devices should be used.
  • A decoder. Discrete devices should be used.
  • A 7 segment display (without decoder)

(note that as Multisim does not run in real time, you may need to adjust clock frequencies to demonstrate each character display time to around 2every second)

Q3 must be successfully answered to achieve criteria 3.2

Q3 Test

Build and test (Multisim acceptable) the design from Q3.

Capture the design and print to at least 70% of the area of A4 page.

Demonstrate the functional circuit and ensure your assessor completes the following declaration.

Observation Statement of compliance with criteria P3.2
The student named below provided evidence by observation that he/she demonstrated the correct operation to specification of the spelling display circuit

Q4 must be successfully answered to achieve criteria D2

Q4 Distinction 2 criteria

Produce a gantt chart (time plan) to show the necessary activities and time required to complete the whole of this assignment. Highlight expected (planned) timescales and actual timescales. Comment on areas where there are differences between what was expected and what happened.
