Approval of Agenda
Approval of December 6th, 2016 minutes
- Moved to approve by G.D., K.R. – Vote: 7 Yes, 0 No, 1 Abstain. Motion carries.
Old Business
- None
New Business (on CAC web-page under “proposals”)
- MATH 225Differential Equations and Linear Algebra (new course)
- Moved to approve with comment by M.A., J.G. – Vote: 7 Yes, 0 No, 0 Abstain. Motion carries.
- COT asked to have a combination course for their students
- Math’s Association of America (MAA) organization has encouraged them to consider combined courses such as these
- There is no final exam; four regular exams instead.
- CHHS-ORPR 535Upper Limb Prosthetics (new course)
- Moved to approve by M.A., J.G. – Vote: 6 Yes, 0 No, 0 Abstain.
- COT-PDD 409Mold Flow Analysis (new course)
- Moved to approve by M.A., G.D. – Vote: 7 Yes, 0 No, 0 Abstain.
- Syllabus appears overly generic.
- Unclear if this is currently part of another course
Discussion
- College Budget Presentation
- Proposed revised instructional budget target calculation from the CAC Budget Committee. To alleviate the arbitrariness of the former model, the committee proposes:
- Departments be put into pedagogical peer groups;
- All departments within the same pedagogical peer group be assigned the same instructional budget target;
- That target be derived from the average FYES/FTEL (actual) of the departments in the group (weighted to account for differences in department size as measured by credit hour production).
- Model is based on a previous iteration with some edits.
- “Pedagogical peer groups” incorporate the idea that lab-based courses require more contact hours (and therefore have lower efficiencies)
- Discussed what to do with departments that straddle pedagogical peer groups (e.g. G&G – geology fits with laboratory science departments; geography with more lecture/discussion based departments)
- No differentiation of undergraduate and graduate courses
- Retain the ability to “balance” smaller upper level and graduate courses with larger intro classes at the department level
- When will this be implemented? Need to see how the metrics come out. Goal is to get the outline/philosophy out in the March CAC meeting. Likely will not be able to vote on anything until at least the Fall.
- Question about how the influence of the new equivalencies on the budgets will be incorporated with these rules. If the equivalencies do play in, does the AAUP need to be involved?
- Discussion about standardized exam prep (e.g. MCAT) being counted as a college course. If courses are based on guidelines/requirements given by a professional society, rather than the exam itself, that seems acceptable.
- We have several math proposals to discuss next time. May invite John (MATH) to attend the March sub-committee meeting based on whether or not we need to have visitors from BIO.
- Actuarial Science and Economics (ASEC)(program revision)
- STAT 372Problems in Actuarial Science I (course revision)
- MATH 450Mathematical Models for Financial Economics (new course)
- MATH 472Problems in Actuarial Science II (course revision)
- MATH 473Long-Term Actuarial Modeling (new course)
- MATH 474Short-Term Actuarial Modeling (new course)
Move to adjourn by R.M.
