Embargo Act - Stopped with ALL other countries → no trade at all with any other country
Why did Jefferson pass the Embargo Act? The British were impressing American sailors, which violated their neutral rights.
What are the effects of the Embargo Act? Exports, imports - the money that we make as a country from trading - drops WAY down. We’re losing money as a country - this hurts us when it was meant to hurt Britain and France.
When James Madison took office...he replaced the Embargo Act with the Nonintercourse Act because he realized the Embargo Act wasn’t working. The Nonintercourse Act said that we could trade with all other countries besides Britain and France.

MARINE HYMN / SUMMARY - CHRONOLOGY - DETAILS:
Barbary States - Morocco, Algiers, Tunis, Tripoli
Barbary Pirates sailed the Mediterranean Seas looking for US ships because the US didn’t pay tributes (protection money) to them.
If a country stopped paying tributes, the Barbary Pirates would stop the boats from that country, take everyone off of them, and then hold them for ransom (money that would need to be paid to get the sailors back)
When Jefferson got into office, he decreased the size of the Navy. He later sent the USS Philadelphia to blockade the harbor of Tripoli, BUT...it hits a reef, runs aground, and then gets captured by the Barbary Pirates.
Stephen DeCatur burned the USS Philadelphia. He burned his own ship because he didn’t want the Pirates to be able to use their own boat against them.
Marines were later called to be used on the ground once we went to war with the Barbary States in Northern Africa to overthrow the Pirates.
Eventually, more countries began to follow the same path as the US, and stood up to the Pirates, and refused to pay their tributes. The Pirates later ceased to exist as a result.
The Marine Hymn - “From the Halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli” is a direct reference to the Marine’s involvement in the Barbary Wars
